Personnel: Anat Cohen (clarinet, soprano saxophone, tenor saxophone); Anat Cohen; Avishai Cohen , Avishai Cohen (trumpet); Ben Street (acoustic bass, double bass); Jason Lindner (piano); Jeff Ballard (drums, percussion). Recording information: Right Track Studios, New York, NY. A talented saxophonist and clarinetist originally from Israel, Anat Cohen has strong tones on tenor, soprano and clarinet and is a creative improviser within the modern mainstream of jazz. She contributed six excellent originals to her debut recording including a few wistful ballads and the somewhat heated "87 North." Her clarinet playing on "Veinte Anso," an immediately recognizable Cuban melody taken here as a tango, is charming. Her quartet, which teams her with the versatile and supportive pianist Jason Lindner, is expanded on four numbers that add her brother Avishai Cohen (no relationship to the famous bassist) who contributes some effective trumpet. With the Cohens sharing the front line and Lindner dropping out, they re-create the sound of the Gerry Mulligan Quartet on "As Catch Can" (even if tenor is substituted for Mulligan's baritone). The other songs are generally more exotic, displaying Anat Cohen's interest in Latin music and her Israeli heritage. All in all, this is a very impressive debut. ~ Scott YanowDown Beat (p.79) - 3.5 stars out of 5 - "She continues her arc of ascent...blessed with the unhurried ease and alerting duende of mature players." JazzTimes (pp.96-98) - "On tenor or soprano saxophone or clarinet, Cohen exhibits expressive tone, precise control and finesse, especially in the tender spots but also when she's stomping and wailing." $13.65 I started to play the clarinet when I was 12. I received my early formal music education in a conservatory and in junior high school in my hometown of Tel-Aviv. At about age 16, when I decided to pursue a major in Jazz at the “Thelma Yelin” High School For The Arts, I was instructed to “bring your brother’s saxophone or…any horn... but NOT the clarinet”. For the next 15 years I played mainly tenor saxophone and only brought out my clarinet occasionally. While attending Berklee College of Music in 1996, I met Phil Wilson, a great musician and educator. He encouraged ...

$9.85 How "Coffeehouse" got re-started after the Internet...Self-Produced 1995DAVID ELIAS - LOST IN THE GREENLost in the Green is an experience in the acoustic sound from the green valley of San Gregorio near San Francisco, CA.David Elias first independent CD is now in its second printing. It is a collection of 13 songs that clearly identify him as one of the artists in the singer-songwriter genre that delivers high impact material over sparse and subtle messages. Acoustic-to-the-bone, this CD covers a lot of ground without revealing everything directly. Keep listening and you will hear hints of fiddle, mandolin, 12-string and other guitars. True to his performances, David has captured the feeling of coffeehouse on this disc. A favorite entertainer on the San Mateo Coast south of San Francisco, David has been compared to John Prine, Townes Van Zandt, Bob Dylan, Guy Clark, Nick Drake and other powerful lyricists and songwriters. His songs have been included on a variety of "Best-Of" MP3 compilations (CD Baby, Earbuzz.com), benefit compilations (MUSE: Musicians United to Sustain the Environment, CHC: Alive in San Gregorio) and movie soundtracks (I ...
