Hammock makes highly atmospheric, largely instrumental music that bridges the ambient and post-rock genres. Like many ambient albums, KENOTIC is mostly concerned with textures and a sense of swirling motion, yet the instrumentation--bass, drums, guitars, and keys--is associated with traditional rock. Hammock relies heavily on production techniques and guitar effects (mostly chorus, delay, and reverb) to achieve a rich, dreamy sound that recalls Sigur Ros, My Bloody Valentine, Cocteau Twins, and Explosions in the Sky.
There are some vocals sprinkled throughout the album, and they blend easily into the instrumental wash. The rhythm section and the low-end synth effects create a pulsing bottom to the ethereal guitar flights, keeping the whole thing grounded, even while each track carries the listener to a soft and gauzy realm. KENOTIC will certainly appeal to fans of experimental rock, and, because it is delicate, lilting, and provides an excellent soundtrack to meditation and yoga, it should appeal to devotees of ambient, New Age, and adult-contemporary instrumental music as well. The Wire (p.68) - "These broad washes of crystalline guitar tones and gently pulsating synths convey a sense of broadness and space..." | Kenotic Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) Alpha & Omega This music tuned me on to post-rock style artists. I bought some of the higher rated Mogwai, Sigur Ros, etc. and culled my library of Cocteau Twins, My Bloody Valentine, etc. and loaded it all on my Ipod. Here's the deal,I bought the entire Hammock library and still think though it was a starting point, I can't get enough - - it's the ending point as well. I have a play list that is all Hammock, plus they're in my post-rock, my ambient, everywhere. I can start the day with it, meditate in my car with it, and fall to sleep with it...I'm addicted. masterpiece Perfect for lonely back roads and 4:00am star gazing!
This is a listening experience worth waiting through. Beautiful and heartbreaking--guitar driven post rock/ambience. Gorgeous! I highly recommended it! Submitted by Christy (Nashville, TN, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.

| | Concrete Blonde CD (1987) Bonus Tracks; Remastered; Special Edition
Kenotic music CDs
$10.69 This debut remains a stunning representation of the band's musical heart. CONCRETE BLONDE has two very distinct approaches that find a way to coexist. One is a straight-ahead punkish abandon with dry-sounding drums ("Your Haunted Head" and "Still In Hollywood") while the other features more involved production; drums wet with effects and layers of harmony vocals ("True" and "Song For Kim"). While the overall production of CONCRETE BLONDE places the album squarely in the mid-'80s, the strength of vocalist/bassist Johnette Napolitano's songwriting and emotionally driven vocals makes it timeless for fans of the band. The band's lovely cover of George Harrison's "Beware Of Darkness" was the first of many songs the band dyed "Blonde."
With the addition of a new drummer, James Mankey and Johnette Napolitano's Dream Six became Concrete Blonde, but the changes did nothing to bring musical focus to the partnership. When Concrete Blonde was released, IRS Records emphasized the track "Still in Hollywood," financing a video and promoting it to radio. The song borders on punk rock, as Mankey repeats the same riff over and over and Napolitano spits out the angry lyric like Exene Cervenka (except, of course, she is careful to stay on-key). But the song's message is confused: Most aspiring stars try to get to Hollywood, no? Even more confused is the multiplicity of musical styles that demonstrated that Concrete Blonde's main characteristic was ambition, not talent. Napolitano didn't much care if she became the next Chrissie Hynde or the next Pat Benatar, as long as she became the next something. | | Rufus Wainwright Want Two CD (2004) Bonus Tracks
Kenotic songs
$9.79 Rufus Wainwright is a red-blooded romantic in a lineage that includes such diverse bards as poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, Broadway songwriter Cole Porter, and singer/songwriter Nick Drake. A conveyor of love's petulant mood swings, Wainwright explores the mechanics of need and sorrow, allowing gorgeous melodies--and a wry sense of humor--to soothe, if not cure, his tragic tendencies.
WANT TWO (the sequel to 2003's more subdued WANT ONE) opens with a haunting take on the Agnes Dei (here titled "Agnus Dei"), replete with guitar noise, orchestral accompaniment, and Cimbalom drone. This traditional Catholic prayer, a plea for mercy and peace, has never sounded so desperate, so dark, and yet, by track's end, so ...
| | Bruce Springsteen Collection, Vol. 2: Nebraska/Lucky Town/In Concert CDs (2002)
Kenotic album
$21.69 Providing the chance to compare Bruce Springsteen's debut and second albums with one recorded almost a decade later, this budget offering captures two sides of the New Jersey troubadour's musical persona. While GREETINGS is an explosion of pent-up imagery and forcefully delivered melodies, and WILD finds Springsteen exploring the possibilities of an expanded musical palette, the bleak, empty production of NEBRASKA proves that sometimes, a lone guitar and a high lonesome wail is all you need.
This trio of budget-priced reissues combines Bruce Springsteen's elemental NEBRASKA, his early-1990s curiosity LUCKY TOWN (originally released in tandem with HUMAN TOUCH, not included ...

Kenotic CD music
$10.15 Simon writes songs. Good ones. Lots of them. He's been described as 'Elvis Costello meets Squeeze meets XTC.'He's played everywhere from the Marquee to the Ruskin Arms, and told the Bishop of Chichester to fuck off. He's not precious about music, but his doctor has advised him to keep writing constantly, to stop great jets of blood squirting out of the top of his head from the pressure. He's influenced by all the music he hears - even if the extent of that influence is: "That's crap." Chopin jostles for ...
