Once again featuring the expansive keyboard talents of Sam Yahel, saxophonist Joshua Redman's Momentum features more of the '70s-influenced jazz the former "young lion" experimented with on 2002's Elastic. Bringing to mind works by such iconic artists as Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, and especially Eddie Harris, Redman digs into sundry groove-oriented tracks such as the driving and punchy "Sweet Nasty," which finds Yahel and Redman soloing hard over drummer Jeff Ballard's James Brown-ready dance beat. Interestingly, Redman conscribes some heavy sidemen to help stir the funk this time around with bassists Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers and jazz-pop iconoclast Me'Shell NdegéOcello adding their signature styles to their respective tracks. Similarly, Roots drummer ?uestlove, drummer Brian Blade, vibraphonist Stefon Harris, and guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkle contribute much with appearances here. However, it is organist Yahel who sets the musical tone for the whole album, adding in bubbly ambient synth sounds, clavinet, and Rhodes piano throughout. With all these talents at Redman's disposal it is disappointing that Momentum isn't more adventurous. When set next to such classics of '70s funk as Davis' On the Corner or Hancock's Head Hunters, Redman's album is just too polite and controlled to really live up to such comparisons. Also, the album relies a bit too heavily on in-studio gimmickry such as when trumpeter Nicholas Payton -- who also released his own paean to '70s fusion with Sonic Trance -- solos with himself overdubbed like a trumpet section on "Put It in Your Pocket." The result ultimately comes off as cheesy and gives the impression of a premeditated improvisation rather than a free flow of ideas. It is also unfortunate that some of the best cuts on the disc like the frenetic and angular "Showtime" are merely short interludes that are never fully developed. Momentum may loose some steam as it goes along, but with such talents on board it is still a fun and funky ride. ~ Matt Collar

grows on you I excitedly purchased this CD after becoming a huge fan of the original Elastic album. At first I was a bit disappointed at the sound, and how they brought in all these guest musicians. Eventually it grew on me, and I've learned to appreciate it for what it is.
If you want to hear this band in another context, listen to Sam Yahel's "Truth and Beauty," the difference is texture and feeling is amazing. Submitted by Jack (Berkeley, CA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Not his best stuff I have been a Joshua Redman fan for many years. His work as a leader of "straightahead" jazz quartets has always amazed me for its quality. He is a hard swinger, technically and musically complex player, and a great improviser (probably the best to emerge in the last decade). The first, self-titled Elastic Band recording with Brian Blade and Sam Yahel was a great depart from previous works, and put him in a very promising direction os the leader of a fantastic, very refreshing organ-based trio. Brian Blade is a monster drummer and there was a lot of rhythmic complexity in there, without losing the swing factor, though. Momentum, although very impressive and full of good musicians, takes it in a direction which is not what I would expect. I think there was a lot more to explore without having to switch to radical "funkiness" and adding so much electronics to the texture. He surely sounds better in a more relaxed context, without samples, synths and a bass player behind. But anyway, it is still an impressive CD, worth listening to. Soulive? I am a BIG Joshua Redman fan. If you want to hear, arguably the best living tenor sax player, at his beat, listen to: "Spirit Of The Moment" or "Beyond".I also love, so-called- "fusion". Some of my all time favorites are Herbie Hancock, Weather Report, Pat Metheny, John McLaughlin, and Gil Scott-Heron.
I do not appreciate how Joshua Redman has made it his mission to sound like Soulive, an average acid-jazz group. Don't get me wrong, I like Soulive for about 5 songs or so. The same can be said for this album. The best song is the last one. Heck, Josh even covers "The Crunge" from Zep's "Houses Of The Holy" and brings no new ideas! It sounds almost exactly like the original, without vocals or guitar. I hope Josh outgrows this phase soon. Submitted by St. Davey (Newark, N.J.) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
the funky this cd funks hard as joshua redman's new release hits. redman has evolved as a player and as a musician. i am so excited to see a new release from the elastic band, their first record was incredible. the guest artists shine through with nicholas payton sounding incredible, and eric krasno from soulive funks it up on a tune. definitely a must have for any funker out there. $22.79 TWENTY YEARS. That’s a long time to even remain FRIENDS, let alone band mates, but … here we are. It was in the summer of 1988 that Sal Bruno, our fabulous sax man, suggested that we three girls learn a few Andrews Sisters tunes to perform at the Camp Stoneman Reunion Day stage door canteen show, for which he was the talent coordinator. Camp Stoneman, which closed its doors for good in 1958, was an active military camp in Pittsburg, CA during WWII. A few of us actually have ties to it, in the form of parents who worked there or traveled through on the way to their war destinations; Jimmy was actually BORN in the Camp! Little did we know that, after having hunted through war surplus stores for pseudo-military WAC uniforms, and doing our little “one time†stint as “The Andrews Sistersâ€, aka “Vocal-Ease and the Fly Boysâ€, that we’d fall so much in love with the music of the ‘40s, we’d be performing it for another twenty years?! Julie, Betsy, Carol, Sal, and Jimmy all met as children, singing and playing guitar for the Good Shepherd Folk Choir in ...
