| | Billy Bang Vietnam: Reflections CD - Import Billy Bang Discography of CDs
Violinist Billy Bang's series of recordings about his Vietnam experiences have helped him open up and purge some demons, and they have resulted in some superior music. On this set, he performs originals that hint at Asian music and often become fertile vamps for the improvisations of Bang and his sidemen. There are also three traditional Vietnamese melodies and brief vocals from Co Boi Nguyen. Bang has rarely sounded better, and he is assisted quite ably in the solo department by altoist James Spaulding, Henry Threadgill (who sticks to flute), trumpeter Ted Daniel, and pianist John Hicks. The music is more post-bop and even hard bop than it is avant-garde, and it is both accessible and creative. Vietnam: Reflections is well worth exploring. ~ Scott Yanow

| | Dave Holland Overtime CD (2005)
Vietnam: Reflections
$13.89 This exceptional date by Dave Holland Big Band was recorded in 2002 in New York, yet remained unreleased until 2005. As is to be expected, Holland assembled a fine cast of seasoned and young players, some of whom are veterans of Holland's quintets and quartets. These are four saxophones -- two alto, tenor and baritone -- three trumpets and trombones, and vibes as well as bass and drums. They include Chris Potter and ...

| | Dave Holland Critical Mass CD (2006)
Vietnam: Reflections
$13.59 One word that comes to mind when listening to Critical Mass is generosity. Double-bassist Dave Holland, four decades into his career, could certainly be forgiven for taking the word "leader" at its literal meaning, calling all the shots and keeping his musicians at bay. But that's not what he's about, and at any given time Critical Mass could just as easily have been credited to saxist Chris Potter, trombonist Robin Eubanks, vibist/marimbaist Steve Nelson, or drummer Nate Smith. Each player is provided with ample moments in which to take charge, and not fleeting, gratuitous moments but rather significant chunks of solo/lead space. Holland's belief ...
| | Oscar Peterson Freedom Song CDs (1982)
Vietnam: Reflections
$16.29 If you're a serious jazz collector who has 50, 60, or more Oscar Peterson CDs in your collection, you can't help but be amazed by the pianist's consistent nature. Many of his releases are predictably excellent, and only on rare occasions has he recorded a weak album. Recorded live at Tokyo's Shibuya Hall in 1982, this two-CD set finds Peterson leading a quartet that employs Joe Pass on guitar, Martin Drew on drums, and Danish improviser Niels-Henning ...
