Continuing the elegant group interplay explored on 2004's I'm All for You, tenor saxophonist Joe Lovano and pianist Hank Jones reunite on Joyous Encounter. Recorded right after finishing the tour in support of the group's aforementioned first outing, Joyous Encounter features a quartet with obvious love for each other and the sound they make together. Once again backed by the stellar rhythm section of bassist George Mraz and drummer Paul Motian, Lovano and Jones showcase their kindred musical spirits with a warm and pleasing mix of deft melodiscm and supple harmony. Expanding upon the ballads-only concept of their previous encounter, this Joyous Encounter finds the ensemble tackling a wide swath of improvisational territory from the urbanely swinging Lovano original "Bird's Eye View," to Thelonious Monk's lightly elegiac "Pannonica," Thad Jones' sweetly gorgeous "A Child Is Born," and even John Coltrane's other classic, the plaintive "Crescent." ~ Matt Collar
Saxophonist Joe Lovano is one of the top musicians in jazz, a title substantiated--beyond his superior technical skills--by his excellent choice in projects and collaborators. JOYOUS ENCOUNTER is no exception, and surpasses even Lovano's celebrated 2004 studio release, I'M ALL FOR YOU. In large part this is attributable to the musicians backing him--drummer Paul Motian, bassist George Mraz, and pianist Hank Jones. Aside from being a jazz fan's dream come true, this quartet displays versatile, elegant, and deeply charged interplay.
The material here is largely restrained post-bop, with forays into lush balladry ("Autumn in New York") and sinuous modal explorations (John Coltrane's "Crescent"). Yet the sophistication of the players makes JOYOUS ENCOUNTER much more than standard fare, giving an almost luminous sense of balance and precision to every track. Jones's elegant, intense piano work and Motian's impressionistic, textural playing, in particular, stand out, complementing the leader's bold-toned, lyrical lines on tunes by Thelonious Monk, Oliver Nelson, and Thad Jones. This is substantial, stylish, and masterful jazz.

JazzTimes (pp.99-100) - "[T]he quartet proves that the coiled grace of its previous session had nothing to do with tempo and everything to do with skill and attitude."

Recorded in June and July, 1977.
Consistently imaginative, Enigmatic Ocean is one of Jean-Luc Ponty's finest accomplishments. The French violinist recorded his share of fusion gems during the 1970s, and this album is at the top of the list. Often aggressive but sometimes reflective and moody, this CD is as unpredictable as it is adventurous. Ponty has plenty of room to stretch out, let loose, and blow, and electric guitarists Allan Holdsworth and ...

Dub is a subgenre of reggae music that first began to develop in the late 1960s, when thrifty producers realized that they could save money on royalties by simply putting the instrumental version of a song (actually, the exact same recording, except with the vocal track stripped out) on the B-side of its single release. At about the same time, they discovered that by messing around with the song's mix -- dropping instruments and voices in and out and embellishing the sound with splashy echo and delay -- they could elicit powerful reactions among the patrons of outdoor "sound system" dances. Dub soon became an art form all its own, and (like reggae in general) it came to full maturity in the early- to mid-'70s. Dub has had a deep and powerful influence on modern dance music; today's remix culture is a direct consequence of dub, and hip-hop itself ...

Swimming
Melfish Swimming CD  (2005)

Joyous Encounter
CD $12.15
'This delightful album was handed to me by Mel Baxter, one half of Sheffield-based female duo Melfish, who along with her musical partner Vicki Workman, are regulars on the cities live music scene. To say its impressive is something of an understatement as this is one of the most enchanting and refreshing albums I've heard in a very long time. Its simplicity is its greatest strength with Mel Baxter's beautifully delicate vocals delivering her inventive and intelligent lyrics over a mainly acoustic base in an intoxicating variety of styles. The Eastern themes of No Fear and the heavier riffs of Spin Out catch the ear but each and every track has something different to offer and make this album a real breath of fresh air.'Steve Ward, Classic Rock Society, May 2005'For want of a better adjective the songs are sexy, balanced on the tip of desire before action becomes irrevocable.' Sandman Magazine, 2005Praise for 'Swimming''As anyone who ever saw Melfish would expect, it's beautiful acoustic guitarwork and great female-slanted lyrics, mixed with backing vocals and sparse electric guitar too, which entwines with its acoustic counterpart brilliantly. Mel's voice is great, delicate for the most, but strong and soaring when needs be.'(Sheffield Star, April 2005)With an album just ready to come out, Mel Baxter and longtime guitar buddy Vic Workman roadtest some of the songs in the intimacy of this central Sheffield bar.The 25-year-old, who has been writing and recording for 12 years, is a regular on the live circuit - and the four songs on the demo she sent us suggest intelligent lyrics and a simple style which should translate well given the right sensitive production. Paper Lantern contains one of several fine lines delivered in breathy vocal: "This guitar made sense of me but made a fool of you"Little Box reminds me a little of the indigo girls while Get To Me is an example of a wistful tune which groes while Bulletproof is pretty.Mel, who plays guitar and takes the lead vocal, and Vic (guitars, backing vocal) met at university where both were studying Popular Music.David Dunn, Sheffield Star, Sunday 29 Jan 2005Mel launches debut albumMelfish is Melanie Kate Baxter who sings and plays acoustic guitar. Normally she is joined by Vicki Workman - they met ...
