Over the course of his musical career, Trent Reznor has managed to deliver a full-length studio album about every five years. Although he's a bit late with 2005's WITH TEETH (following 1999's THE FRAGILE), listeners are rewarded with Nine Inch Nails' most streamlined and straightforward record since PRETTY HATE MACHINE. Here Reznor cuts back on programming and synthesizers, opting for heavy use of guitars, ...
| | Harvest Showdown CD (2005) (Import) United Kingdom
Wrath Of Circuits album
$15.75 Officially, this 14-song CD has been issued to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the Move's signing to the Harvest Records label, in the EMI group of labels. So why isn't it listed as a Move release? Because the Move only lasted about a year after that, but in the three years after the contract was inked, members Roy Wood and Jeff Lynne, together and apart, ended up delivering a veritable cornucopia of unusual rock & roll sounds -- that's what this delightfully weird CD is about, and the tragedy is that, because it's not listed under ELO, the Move, Jeff Lynne, or Roy Wood, a lot of their fans are going to miss it. Even worse, it's so much fun that it ought to be heard far beyond the confines of their fandom. The disc basically collects a multitude of singles, and a few rare mixes and edits in the bargain, representing the various facets of Wood and Lynne's work in those contexts, all remastered in state-of-the-art clarity and supported by a nicely illustrated insert booklet. For starters, the sound is killer -- the crunching guitars on the single edit of the Move's "Do Ya" start things off with a bang and the mono U.S. mix of "10538 Overture" keeps that ball rolling. Wizzard's "Ballpark Incident" and Wood's "Forever" show off his rock & roll and pop/rock inclinations of this era at their most finely developed and tuned, and "The Carlsberg Special," with its cascading keyboard sound, takes him into ELO territory, which carries listeners to the single edit of the latter's "Mr. Radio." "Rock Down Low" is a Wood solo rock & roll classic featuring a cello break, no less, while "King Henry VIII's B*ll*cks" is an early version of what eventually became "In Old England Town" on the second ELO album -- and then listeners are back to the single edit of the extraordinary Move acoustic guitar-driven "Tonight." And that's how it goes, the CD alternating between the highlights of the careers associated with all four bodies of music that grew out of that one signing, over that three-year period -- and what makes it really cool, besides the great sound and the choice of songs, is the diversity and the quality of the music. Indeed, it kind of makes one wish that instead of Sony/Legacy gracing listeners with two ...
| | Funkadelic America Eats Its Young CD (1972) Bonus Track; Remastered
Wrath Of Circuits CD music
$16.09 A double album and worth every minute of it, America Eats Its Young makes for a freaky, funky, and aware good time. Compared to the endless slabs of double-album dreck that came out around the same time from all sources, here Funkadelic brought life, soul, and much more to the party. With George Clinton credited only for arranging and producing, here the mad cast he brought together went all out. Bernie Worrell in particular now had a new importance, credited as co-arranger with Clinton as well as handling string and horn charts on a number of songs. His surging, never-stop keyboards, meanwhile, took control from the start, with his magnificent lead break on the opening "You Hit the Nail on the Head" making for one of the best performances ever on Hammond organ. Bootsy Collins (credited as William) is also somewhere in the crowd on bass and vocals, while old favorites like Eddie Hazel and Tiki Fulwood, among many others, can be found. Perhaps to fill in the time, a few numbers from the first Parliament album, Osmium, two years before cropped up, namely "Loose Booty" and the hilariously sleazy "I Call My Baby Pussycat," here performed with a noticeably slower, dirty groove. The straightforward social call to arms appears throughout, with one song title saying it all -- "If You Don't Like the Effects, Don't Produce the Cause." Other winners include the vicious title track, combining everything from mysterious, doom-laden voices and weeping wails to slow, sad music, and the concluding "Wake Up," while "Everybody Is Going to Make It ...
| | Joey Defrancesco Organic Vibes CD (2006)
Wrath Of Circuits music CDs
$9.59 Having reviewed some of Hammond organist Joey DeFrancesco's early albums on Columbia, then caught up with him again when he teamed up with the high-flying guitar acrobat Danny Gatton on Relentless, and then lost track of him, the word that comes to mind upon hearing this effort for Concord is "adult." DeFrancesco's earlier work was that of a young and precocious kid with a burning love of his instrument and something to prove. Fifteen years into what has become a celebrated career, he's settled in and is demonstrating the kind of taste and maturity that separates the flashy young hotshots from the ...
