For close to two decades, the vibrant South African singer/songwriter Jonathan Butler has become so well known for his impassioned vocals that it's easy to take his formidable guitar talents for granted. Most of his recordings include a few light acoustic guitar instrumentals amid a gathering of more memorable vocals, but on the Jonathan collection -- his debut for Rendezvous, an indie label co-owned by saxman Dave Koz -- Butler reverses the trend, to pleasing effect. It's hardly surprising that, despite the likeable instrumentals, smooth jazz radio gravitated first to his robust cover of James Taylor's "Fire and Rain," one of two songs featuring lead vocals. But fans eager to see his melodic, romantic acoustic guitar side will be pleased with the memorable pieces that dominate the set -- which compare favorably to the kind of smooth jazz tunes popularized by guitarist Peter White. Most of these are of a festive nature, from the coolly exotic opener, "Rio," to the joyful, bouncy ode to his homeland, which rings very authentic to his optimistic indigenous spirit. "Spirit of Our Nation," featuring daughter Jodie Butler on backing vocals, perhaps most beautifully blends Butler's spiritual and smooth sides. This disc won't make fans forget that he's a great vocalist, first and foremost, but it's good to see him try some new things that listeners can have fun with. ~ Jonathan Widran

Jonathan album
$6.39 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra's "Summer Wine."
Somewhat more mysteriously, Rolling Stone Ron Wood also turns up on what sounds dangerously ...
| | Steve Cole Ny La CD (2003)
Jonathan CD music
$9.09 Burgeoning smooth jazz superstar Steve Cole continues to bridge the gap between pop-jazz and classic R&B on his third studio album, NY LA. Featuring strong melodic statements and truly funky keyboards via the likes of Brian Culbertson and Marquis "Hami" Dair, NY LA is a moody and solid affair. From the disco-influenced "Off Broadway," which harkens back to the best work of the Crusaders, to the Donald Byrd-esque "Interlude IV," tenor saxophonist Cole deftly crosses the boundary from jazz soloist to R&B heavyweight. More Grover Washington, Jr. than Kenny G., Cole manages to keep things organic and simple -- despite the use of programmed drum beats and synthesizers -- a lesson some of his contemporaries could learn. Also adding depth are the vocal tracks featuring the crisply soulful Mauli B., whose star-making performance on "Every Little Thing" is a highlight on this already stellar release. ~ Matt Collar

| | Peter White Confidential CD (2004)
Jonathan music CDs
$7.59 Guitarist Peter White follows up his 2001 release Glow with more solid melodic smooth jazz on Confidential. Once again there is an amiable mix of quiet storm-ready ballads, up-tempo Latin numbers, and groove-oriented soundscapes. Joining White are such instrumental pop luminaries as trumpeter Chris Botti, keyboardist Brian Culbertson, and percussionist Paulinho Da Costa. While there are no particular surprises here, fans of White's incomparable guitar playing should find much to enjoy on this laid-back disc. ~ Matt Collar

| | Boney James Pure CD (2004)
Jonathan songs
$9.59 Nine albums into his career, Boney James makes a grab for the smooth-jazz crown with PURE, an outing that finds him working with a mix of soul and jazz luminaries. James ups the stakes by taking over the production reins (in addition to co-writing every song). Still front and center with his beloved tenor saxophone, this Grammy-nominated artist shifts to soprano sax for the harmony-soaked Bilal duet "Better with Time" and the silk sheets-and-champagne slow jam "Break of Dawn," featuring up-and-coming Detroit crooner Dwele.
Debi Nova adds her lovely vocals to the beat-driven "Appreciate," a cut that wouldn't sound out of place on a Toni Braxton or Brandy album. Instrumentals are still the focus, however, as revealed on the light funk of "Here She Comes" and the snappy "Stone Groove" (featuring Crusaders keyboardist Joe Sample). Most impressive of all, the languid closing number, "You Don't Have to Go Home," showcases the interplay of Billy Preston's Hammond B-3 lines and Bobby Lyle's subtle piano runs.

| | Norman Brown West Coast Coolin' CD (2004)
Jonathan album
$9.09 As one of the six-string lite-jazz inheritors of the Wes Montgomery guitar-jazz mantle, Norman Brown continues to bridge the worlds of musical improvisation and contemporary R&B via the crisp WEST COAST COOLIN'. In following up the success of 2002's JUST CHILLIN', the Louisiana native continues to infuse more soul nuances into his music by recruiting producers James Poyser and Vikter Dupliax, better known for working with neo-soul stalwarts Jill Scott, D'Angelo, and Erykah Badu. The result is an airy yet intricate romp that finds Brown not only serving up a percolating reading of the Marvin Gaye classic "What's Going On," but doing equally well with the far funkier opener, "I Might," with its slightly hip-hop-flavored beats and shuffling cadence.
The remaining eight tracks don't disappoint, as the guitarist keeps up a crackling pace. The snappy "Up 'N' at 'Em" finds Brown tossing in just enough George Benson-like scatting to satisfy any old-school aficionados. Also notable ...
| | Brian Culbertson It's On Tonight CD (2005)
Jonathan CD music
$11.99 With its seething, laid-back funk beats and steamy lyrics full of obvious references to romantic trysts, it doesn't get any sexier than Brian Culbertson's IT'S ON TONIGHT. A number of prominent crossover jazz artist lend their talents here. For example, the downtempo title track features a sensual R&B vocal from singer Will Downing. Later, saxophonist Boney James' mellifluous lines become the focus of "The Way You Feel." On "Secret Affair," relative newcomer Chris Botti plays Miles Davis-influenced ...

Jonathan music CDs
$12.39 In a world where many Christians feel the pressure to put up a perfect front, one man is openly sharing a life story that parallels that of the Biblical prodigal son. This singer/songwriter is on the journey of a lifetime as he seeks to share his unique insights about the Christian walk in the form of his music. Stephen Bautista recently spent several months traveling to and from Nashville, Tenn., for the production of his debut CD entitled Abandon, a contemporary Christian collection of ten original songs about the journey, struggles, and joys of the common Christian's walk of faith."This album explores the feelings, thoughts and experiences I have had in the course of this unlikely relationship between a perfect, almighty God and an imperfect man," Bautista stated. "The title song, for example, is a recognition that often times we have to come out of our comfort zones to fit into God's will. This is basically what I'm doing with my music ministry."Abandon was produced by veteran Nashville producer Eric Copeland of Creative Soul Records. Copeland, who lives by the motto "good isn't good enough," assembled a team of top studio musicians whose resumes include projects for Steven Curtis Chapman, Michael W. Smith, Faith Hill, Michael McDonald, and Amy Grant, among others, along with the engineering skills of Grammy Award winning sound engineer, Ronnie Brookshire."I never dreamed that I would get the opportunity to work in the studio with such amazing talent," Bautista said. "As a musician, it was a humbling experience, but they really took my music to a whole new level."Bautista comes from a long line of Christian musicians, including his late father who filled the family home with classical and jazz piano music, planting the ...
