Of course, with the members barely into their early 20s, the trials and tribulations of romance are never far away. When vocalist Kenny Vasoli isn't confessing to missing his significant other on "Stay Where I Can See You," he's defiantly stepping away from a broken relationship within the confines of the anthemic "Cut! Print It." Incorporating decidedly non-punk instrumentation (harpsichord and glockenspiel) into the Starting Line's beloved emo sound, BASED ON A TRUE STORY opens an intriguing new chapter for the band.
In going from pop-punk neophytes on their 2002 full-length debut, SAY IT LIKE YOU MEAN IT, to more accomplished tunesmiths on the 2005 follow-up, BASED ON A TRUE STORY, the Starting Line achieved a surprising level of success. Although sugarcoated angst continues to be the main currency of these Pennsylvania natives, their songs this time around address the pitfalls accompanying fame. Financial demands prime the pump of insecurity amid the stop-and-start time changes of "Inspired by the $." Despite such woes, the quintet still marvels at how fast rock-star status hit them, within the choppy riffs and whip-smart rhythms of "Autography."
The Starting Line: Ken Vasoli (vocals, guitar, Wurlitzer piano, harpsichord, synthesizer, glockenspiel, bass instrument, bongos); Mike Golla (guitar, celesta, percussion); Matt Watts (guitar); Tom Gryskeiwitz (drums, percussion).
Rolling Stone (p.80) - 3 stars out of 5 - "[T]he Starting Line know how to make sweetly wordy pop out of over-the-top romantic naivete." Alternative Press (p.121) - 5 out of 5 - "The best moments on BASED ON A TRUE STORY come in the form of long exhales: meditative guitar dirges that recall a time when underground emotional punk bands had no business infiltrating commercial radio." Starting Line Based On A True Story Songs Based On A True Story Music Review Average Rating: (4.5 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Based on a True Story I bought this CD having only heard a single off of Say It Like You Mean It. It took a long time to warm up to, but now it rarely leaves my listening rotation.
Unless you listen, I mean really listen, to the instrumentals, they tend to drone on throughout the CD. However, if you do listen to them, you'll find a cornucopia of sounds not heard from bands in the same genre.
Kenny Viasoli's vocal style, one of raw, tangible emotion, is well displayed on the album. And though it takes a lot of listening to comprehend, the lyrics are fulfilling and personal, rather than vague.
Despite the lack of catchy hooks and quick one-liner's (if you like that kind of thing), Based On A True Story is definitely a cd for your collection. Submitted by jake_z09 (NE, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.
Great Sounding CD I was introduced to this band by a girlfriend a while back and have been a loyal fan ever since. I think TSL's biggest strength and the quality that sets it apart from most other bands is that it's a band that succeeds in building a very unmistakable character which bleeds through in their music and lyrics. I felt that some songs were given more attention than others and therefore, would have given this cd a five star rating otherwise. If you want to try something new and think you might like this band I would definitely recommend giving them a try. Submitted by Logan (Pocahontas, AR, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

| | Beaver & Krause Gandharva CD (1971)
Based On A True Story music CDs
$10.29 In electronic music circles -- and among "heads" in general -- the names of Beaver & Krause have attained an almost mystical status that their small back catalog frankly struggles to live up to. Sure, they were matchmakers when commercial rock and electronic music were circling each other warily -- it was Bernie Krause, in particular, who introduced the Moog synthesizer to the likes of George Harrison and Micky Dolenz (though he neglected to show them how to put it to good use). Yet much of their recorded work sounds remarkably timid when compared to that of other electronic pioneers of the period. Ironically, the most powerful music they committed to record involved hardly any electronic input whatsoever. The suite that filled the second side of Gandharva ...
