Personnel: Peppino d'Agostino (guitar, acoustic guitar); Peppino d'Agostino (classical guitar); Stef Burns (electric guitar, bass guitar); Sheila E. (percussion). Recording information: Blue 52 Studios, Sherman Oaks, CA (02/2004/03/2004); One Way Studio, Benicia, CA (02/2004/03/2004); Royal Recording Company, Benicia, CA (02/2004/03/2004); Spark Studios, Emeryville, CA (02/2004/03/2004). Arranger: Steven King. In a pairing that could probably only take place on a label owned by a visionary guitar legend, Steve Vai and Favored Nations' historic summit between two of the world's most renowned guitarists -- one an acoustic improvisational legend, the other an electric virtuoso -- lives up to its remarkable promise. Beginning with the snappy, midtempo, improv-rich title track (named for the street where they share a studio north of San Francisco), the collection celebrates the melodic and rhythmic joys of both guitars, as well as one of the instrumental world's most inspiring creative friendships and partnerships. There's a rich back story to the partnership, but suffice to say that the tandem was more than just a clever marketing ploy. Though the two are known in different worlds with different axes, they share a common ground in their love of blues and the Beatles, and their affinity for jazz -- typified by their crisp, ultra-percussive twist on the classic "Birdland" -- fits right in the mix. The best originals here include the mystical and dusty cowboy flick-flavored "Better World," the contemplative ballad "Inner Sanctuary," a romantic visit to Brazil called "Manha de Carnaval," and a crazy and fun bluegrass jam curiously named "Jerry's Breakdown." The disc prompted a successful tour of Italy, where Stef Burns is very popular, in early 2005. ~ Jonathan Widran Guitarists Peppino D'Agostino and Stef Burns team up on BAYSHORE ROAD to create music inspired by the Bay area. The San Francisco six-stringers collaborate beautifully on this album and their music runs the gamut from soft and reflective to fast and furious. On all 10 tracks, D'Agostino and Burns combine the warm, often romantic, sound of the acoustic guitar (D'Agostino) with soaring electric leads (Burns). Performing a mixture of originals and covers, this album also explores a myriad of musical styles. For example, the duo's gentle interpretation the Bonfá-Maria bossa nova "Manha de Carnaval" stands in stark contrast to the fevered pitch of D'Agostino's "Beyond the Dunes." Other selections such as "Venus Over Venice" highlight Burns's ability to phrase a melody with both clarity and deep emotion; comparisons to David Gilmore immediately come to mind. BAYSHORE ROAD closes with a spirited version of Joe Zawinul's "Birdland," which sees D'Agostino and Burns in heated interplay. Overall, the use of both acoustic and electric guitars gives this album depth, intensity, and color.

| | Zac Brown Foundation CD (2008)
Bayshore Road
$12.55 On 2008's THE FOUNDATION, singer/guitarist Zac Brown leads his ensemble on a vibrant set of country-rock. While the Georgia-based performer is clearly comfortable with ballads (see his emotive cover of Ray LaMontagne's "Jolene"), he seems most at home on twangy, carefree tracks such as "Toes," "Chicken Fried," and "Sic `Em on a Chicken." Now that Jimmy Buffett has tried repositioning himself as a country artist by cutting duets with the likes of Alan Jackson, Kenny Chesney and Clint Black, it should come as no surprise that the Parrothead influence has begun making its way into Nashville, and the first major-label effort from Zac Brown features not one but two songs ("Toes" and "Where the Boat Leaves From") devoted to the joys of getting buzzed and playing music in some seaside locale with good weather. Seeing how most of the great names of country's ...
| | Rush Working Men CD (2009)
Bayshore Road
$14.54 Rush is no stranger to best-of compilation albums, they've released a slew of them. They are also no stranger to DVDs. To mark their 35th anniversary, they've released Working Men, which is both; it marks their first best-of live compilation exclusively from the DVD sets Rush in Rio (2003), R30 (2005), and Snakes & Arrows Live (2008). There is also an unreleased cut from R30 -- a killer version of One Little Victory. While fans may simply regard this as a record company cash grab, hardcore fans know how closely Rush monitors each release and controls all aspects of their career. On hearing these tracks without benefit of the visuals, it becomes lucidly clear that in the 21st century, Rush plays more like a hungry act looking to prove themselves rather than as seasoned veterans jaded by the entire business. The instrumental interaction between ...

| | Andrews Sisters 50th Anniversary Collection, Vol. 1 CD (1990)
Bayshore Road
$6.49 Includes liner notes by band leader Vic Schoen. Personnel: LaVerne Andrews, Maxene Andrews, Patty Andrews (vocals). Audio Remasterer: Doug Schwartz. Recording information: Sound Tek Studios, NY. Unknown Contributor Roles: Dale Sizer; Al Jolson; Vic Schoen; Danny Kaye. The first of a very good two-volume collection of some of the Andrews Sisters' best work, this 16-song CD was more than essential at the time of its release, mostly due to the presence of several numbers that hadn't been heard in decades: "Pagan Love Song," "Shoo Shoo Baby," "Bounce Me Brother With a Solid Four," "Gimme Some Skin My Friend," their rendition of "Tuxedo Junction," and their Danny Kaye and Al Jolson collaborations, "Civilization" and "Way Down Yonder In New Orleans." Apart from the Jolson number, which was in release in 1956, none of the others had been ...
