| | Devo Shout CD Devo Discography of CDs
(1 Customer Review)
Devo's 1984 release SHOUT showed that the band was losing a bit of focus. Perhaps the misdirection could be attributed to drummer Alan Meyers' unhappiness with Devo's more extensive use of electronic drum machines, and a bad relationship with their record company at the time. Where Devo's earlier albums did contain robotic music and stiff playing, there was still a certain charm and warmth--traditional instruments (electric guitars and acoustic drums) were still an integral part of the sound. These elements are absent on SHOUT.
Following in the tradition of Devo's reconstructive covers of past standards ("Satisfaction" on their debut and "Secret Agent Man" on DUTY NOW FOR THE FUTURE), the band updates Jimi Hendrix's "Are You Experienced?" with '80s sounds. The title track takes a horn sample and transforms it into an electronic dance track. "Here To Go" is one of the few songs on the album to use guitar, while the quirky "The 4th Dimension" contains the guitar riff from the Beatles' "Day Tripper." SHOUT is not up to the high standards set by Devo's first five banner albums, but it does have its moments.

Shout album
$5.99 Devo's 1978 debut is an absolute new wave/alternative classic. Produced by Brian Eno, the album serves as a great introduction to the band's quirky and highly original sound-- stiff grooves, robotic rhythms, and humorously intellectual lyrics abound. Although Devo is considered a joke band by some, co-leaders Mark Mothersbaugh and Gerald Casale are exceptional songwriters, capable of creating unpredictable song structures and contagious melodies (Soundgarden, Nirvana, and Robert Palmer have all covered Devo compositions). That ...
| | Devo Freedom Of Choice CD (1980)
Shout CD music
$8.39 1980's FREEDOM OF CHOICE proved to be Devo's big commercial breakthrough. Due to its massive hit single "Whip It" (one of the most memorable and original singles of the year) and a more refined sound, FREEDOM OF CHOICE is Devo's most popular album, easily on par with their classic '78 debut. Along with albums by Blondie, The Cars, The B-52's, and Talking Heads, FREEDOM was one of the first new wave records to break into the mainstream, helping to pave the way for the success of "alternative rock."
Although "Whip ...
| | Gang Of Four Hard/Solid Gold CD (2003)
Shout music CDs
$12.39 1983's HARD found drummer Hugo Burnham replaced by a drum machine. Additionally, the album's production substituted the band's previous angularity for a lush, polished sound augmented by backing singers and synthesizers, which longtime fans found hard to take. But both "Is It Love" and "Womantown" have a smoky mystery, while "A Man With a Good Car" is an energetic backward glance at the band's post-punk roots.
Gang Of Four were a British new wave band formed in 1980 by lead singer Jon King and guitarist Andy Gill. They had four albums hit the Billboard charts between 1981 & 1983. Two of those albums comprise this 2-on-1 CD. Hard is making its worldwide CD debut and ...
| | Devo New Traditionalists CD (1981)
Shout songs
$9.79 With the commercial success of their previous album FREEDOM OF CHOICE, the pressure was on Devo to come up with another hit. While NEW TRADITIONALISTS was indeed an exceptional album, it did not replicate the commercial success of its predecessor. The album was the first to be completely produced by the band, and also marks the first time that keyboards and electronic drums would dominate the arrangements on a Devo record (little guitar is heard), resulting in a much more computerized and precise sound. But the songwriting skills of Mark Mothersbaugh and Gerald Casale were in full effect, as Devo's trademark humor and wit were on full display.
The opener, "Through Being Cool," catches the band at it's most fun. Other technoid highlights abound, such as the forgotten early-'80s MTV hit "Love Without ...
| | Devo Duty Now For The Future CD (1979)
Shout album
$9.79 Although not quite as stellar as its predecessor, 1979's 'DUTY NOW FOR THE FUTURE' is a solid second release by those loveable spuds from Ohio. With hindsight, DUTY helped bridge the gap between the quirky weirdness of their debut and their more accessible third album, FREEDOM OF CHOICE, which would prove to be their breakthrough commercial success (achieving gold status and spawning the classic new wave hit "Whip It"). Replacing Brian Eno as producer is another Bowie disciple, Ken Scott (ZIGGY STARDUST, HUNKY DORY), who helps guide the band towards ...
| | Oh, No! It's Devo CD (1982)
Shout CD music
$9.95 Devo had an arsenal of past video clips at their disposal, the band benefited greatly from the station's support. The album was musically similar to it's predecessor (keyboard programming and drum machines are a principal tool), and with the success of the videos for "Peek-A-Boo" and "That's Good," Devo were one of 1982's undisputed new wave kings. Although produced by Roy Thomas Baker, who was noted for his work with rockers such as ...

| | Sundays Static & Silence CD (1997)
Shout songs
$6.75 Without abandoning the quirky mix of gorgeous, acoustic guitar-driven pop tunes and heart-rending, misery-driven lyrics with which they're most closely associated, The Sundays' STATIC & SILENCE finds the band further fleshing out their lush, dreamy mope-scapes. With a darker, slower approach more akin to Country than to Britpop, Harriet Wheeler's angelic voice and melancholic lyrics are given a more intimate treatment than on previous albums. ...
