Sunday in the Park with George Soundtrack Product Description
Sunday in the Park with George Soundtrack by Mandy Patinkin / Bernadette Peters was released Mar 20, 2007 on the Sony Music label. This installment of the Sony Masterworks label's 2007 reissue series presents the original 1980s cast recording of Sunday IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE, Stephen Sondheim's musical about the life and work of French painter Georges Seurat. The production stars Mandy Patinkin as Seurat and Bernadette Peters as Dot (a clever nod to the artist's style), allowing the renowned vocal powerhouses to play off of each other in a number of duets, most notably on the bright "Color and Light" and the melancholy "We Do Not Belong Together." Composed by Stephen Sondheim. Sunday in the Park with George Soundtrack contains a single disc with 18 songs. ...See Full Description

Original Soundtrack |
Sunday in the Park with George Soundtrack As the auteur of post-punk suburban adolescence, director John Hughes appropriately enhanced his '80s movies with relatively harmless new wave soundtracks. Where earlier films like The Breakfast Club and Sixteen Candles included the occasional Wang Chung or Simple Minds track, though, 1986's Pretty in Pink boasted a full lineup of "rock of the '80s" highlights. Foremost, of course, is the Psychedelic Furs' breakout remake of their 1981 college radio favorite "Pretty in Pink"; while it pales in relation to the raw and electric original, this new version still holds up even with some added horns and a general glossing over of the once hard-driving guitar and drum parts. Even better are tracks by OMD ("If You Leave"), Echo & the Bunnymen ("Bring on the Dancing Horses"), and the Smiths ("Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want"). These era-defining sides certainly help make lukewarm additions like New Order's "Shell-Shock," INXS' "Do Wot You Do," and Belouis Some's "Round, Round" easy to get through. And for more marginal new wave fare, there's Jesse Johnson's Prince-inspired "Get to Know Ya" and Danny Hutton's pop/rocker "Wouldn't It Be Good." Topped off by Suzanne Vega's respectable reworking of her hit "Left of Center," Pretty in Pink qualifies as one of the more relevant youth culture soundtracks. ~ Stephen Cook

Original Soundtrack / Tom Newman American Beauty CD (2000)
Sunday in the Park with George Soundtrack AMERICAN BEAUTY won the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Score Soundtrack Album for a Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media.
AMERICAN BEAUTY was nominated for the 1999 Academy Awards For Best Original Score.
Shortly after the release of the American Beauty soundtrack -- which featured tantalizing excerpts from Thomas Newman's music bookending a collection of pop songs -- came the release of the full score. From the film's haunting main theme and "Any Other Name" to the witty, percussive "Dead Already," "Choking the Bishop," and "Mr. Smarty Man," Newman's score evokes as much feeling and humor as the film itself does. Even more so than the first volume of the soundtrack, the score from American Beauty is a necessity for the movie's fans. ~ Heather Phares

Schindler's List CD (1994)
Sunday in the Park with George Soundtrack All music written by John Williams except "OYF'N Pripetshok" (Mark Warschafsky) and "Yeroushalaim Chel Zahav" (Naomi Shemer).
SCHINDLER'S LIST won the 1995 Grammy for Best Instrumental Composition Written For A Motion Picture Or For Television.
When John Williams received his 29th Academy Award nomination for Schindler's List, he had already won Oscars for Fiddler on the Roof, Jaws, Star Wars, and E.T.: The Extra Terrestrial. He had long been an automatic nominee, but as Hollywood's most honored working composer it was generally believed that it would take an extraordinary addition to his legacy for the Academy to award Williams a fifth trophy. Schindler's List would prove to be that extraordinary work -- and not just because of the enormous historical and social import of the film and it's subject, though those factors could only have strengthened Williams appeal to Academy voters. Schindler's List feels like his attempt at a magnum opus. Though even simpler in its melodies and themes than some of his famous sweeping popcorn movie scores, it carries the ambition of a major symphonic composition. This is especially true in the segments that are graced with exquisitely rich and evocative violin solos by world famous violinist Itzhak Perlman. Perlman's masterful performances give Williams' compositions an authenticity and grounding that offsets the composer's predilection for sentimentality and bombast. "Restraint" was the word that appeared most frequently in discussions of Steven Spielberg's Holocaust epic. The critical consensus was that the director had managed to depict the horrors of the greatest tragedy in world history without giving in to his customary urges to tug transparently at the heart strings of his audiences. In truth, Spielberg was only able to exercise restraint through the first two and a half hours of the film; he ended up throwing it out the window in the maudlin conclusion. Williams, too, is guilty of indulging in emotional excess. Which isn't surprising when you consider that his music has always been one of Spielberg's most effective heart-tugging tools. Like the film itself, his score is best at its simplest, deriving its emotional power from the events it depicts and bearing in mind that audiences do not need help from filmmakers and composers in order to be emotionally affected by the Holocaust. ~ Evan Cater

Juice Vocal Ensemble Songspin CD (2011)
Sunday in the Park with George Soundtrack Juice, the a cappella British women's vocal trio, doesn't sound quite like anything else; it is truly sui generis. Other music that its work at various times calls to mind includes that of Meredith Monk (most strongly), Bobby McFerrin, Toby Twining, the Swingle Singers, Tuvan throat singers, and the sweet harmonies of more traditional women's folk ensembles. Sopranos Anna Snow and Sarah Dacey are traditionally trained singers with distinguished solo careers and alto Kerry Andrew, known primarily as a composer, is a prominent figure on the British new music scene. In most of these pieces they sing with a relatively straight, folk-like tone, although their astonishing virtuosity leaves no doubt that they could also negotiate the most florid coloratura repertoire.
The program is wonderfully diverse, ranging from a straightforward performance of Elisabeth Lutyens' modernist 1974 motet Of the Snow, to the group's inventive arrangements of folk songs, to new pieces by composers like Gabriel Prokofiev, Morag Galloway, Paul Robinson, and Juice member Andrew, written to showcase the singers' distinctive abilities and aesthetic proclivities. One thing that immediately stands out in their performances is that (almost) no matter how demanding the music in the extremity of it range, the density of its harmonies, the eccentricities of its timbres, and the complexity of its rhythms, the singers make consistently beautiful sounds with astonishingly clean intonation. The instances where tone or pitch falter, as in parts of Luna-cy, are few and far between. This could be a good starter album for fans of vocal music willing to venture out into the realm of new music; the human voice softens the effect of dissonance more than any other instrument, and chords that might be jarring if heard played by a piano or a choir of clarinets can have a cushiony warmth when sung in tune and with lovely tone quality, as they are here. Standout performances include the ensemble's profoundly creepy arrangement of the disturbing English folk song Cruel Mother (Down by the Greenwood Side), Paul Robinson's whimsical The Triadic Riddles of Water, David Breslin's Skuld, and James Lindsay's kinetic Sanbiki no kashikoi saru. As with most of Nonclassical label's releases, several tracks are devoted to inventive remixes of some of the pieces. The sound is clean, detailed, and realistic. ~ Stephen Eddins
