The title of Interpol's second album, ANTICS, may conjure up images of carefree adventure, but anyone familiar with the New York City band's brooding post-punk sound knows that there's nothing lighthearted about their music. Although it's not a radical departure, ANTICS does reveal a broadening of the group's sonic palette. The opening track, "Next Exit," is a slowly building, piano-laden anthem, marked by singer Paul Banks's remarkably widened vocal range and strangely hopeful lyrics. Clearly the group is eager to move beyond the endless Joy Division comparisons they previously garnered, and this bid works to wonderful effect. Of course, many of the elements that made their debut, TURN ON THE BRIGHT LIGHTS, so entrancing--soaring guitar riffs, tight bass lines, frenetic drumming--are still present, particularly on "Narc" and "Slow Hands," but even these tracks aren't merely content to repeat past glories. A solid album that improves upon its predecessor, ANTICS sees Interpol shaking off the mixed blessing of being the Next Big Thing, and hitting a new creative stride.
Asian pressing of their sophomore album features the same bonus tracks as the Japanese edition, 'Slow Hands' (Dan the Automater Remix,) 'Slow Hands' (Britt Daniel Remix) and 'Slow Hands' (Enhanced Video). EMI. 2005.Rolling Stone (p.96) - 4 stars out of 5 - "ANTICS achieves a tunefulness that warms and broadens Interpol's music, and helps them establish an identity distinct from their dolorous influences." Rolling Stone (p.144) - Included in Rolling Stone's Top 50 Records Of 2004 - "Interpol energize their post-punk with less-bleak lyrics and more-substantial tunes on ANTICS." Spin (pp.107-8) - "Banks has created a romantic persona worthy of Bryan Ferry....[T]here's some air in the arrangements - the album feels confident and spacious..." - Grade: A- Spin (p.67) - Ranked #9 in Spin's "40 Best Albums of the Year" - "Banks lays the closing-time mojo on heavy....Assured..." Entertainment Weekly (p.73) - "[A]mong the free-associated lyrics about hurting hearts and, literally, ship in the night is a band that's just begun to excavate the crevices of their cold, dark souls." - Grade: B+ Uncut (p.98) - 4 stars out of 5 - "[A]ngular and intense....This is cut to perfection: exhilarating, morbid, romantic, cool." Uncut (p.76) - Ranked #40 in Uncut's "Best New Albums of 2004" - "Thrillingly morbid and yet somehow coldly sexy." Magnet (p.67) - Ranked #12 in Magnet's "The 20 Best Albums Of 2004" - "ANTICS swells with broad-shouldered choruses and frontman Paul Banks' romantic verse." CMJ (p.42) - "[I]ncorporating some surprisingly effective disco elements, where the totally underrated rhythm section really shines." Mojo (Publisher) (p.116) - 3 stars out of 5 - "ANTICS certainly packs the same wired punch as their first album..." Antics Review

Antics album
$12.29 BY A THREAD is Gov't Mule's first studio album since HIGH & MIGHTY was issued in 2006. Since that time, bassist Andy Hess has been replaced by Jorgen Carlsson, though Hess appears on two tracks at the end of the album. Carlsson's playing style is much more aggressive than Hess', and is therefore closer - in spirit anyway - to Gov't Mule's original bassist, the late Allen Woody, though he possesses an adventurous sense of time and is harmonically more colorful than either Woody or Hess. Carlsson and drummer Matt Abst are a solid match, since Abst is a drummer used to shifting time signatures and allowing the unexpected in while still driving a band. The band's keyboardist and rhythm guitarist, Danny Louis, is a shape-shifter, playing to whatever is needed in a given track. His manner of coloring sounds inside and around a particular tune's framework is a large part of what makes Gov't Mule's sound so fresh here - despite the fact that they don't stray far from what they do ...

Commemorating the 25th anniversary of Elvis Presley's death, 30 #1 HITS presents a career-spanning serving of the King's chart-toppers.
Dating back to "Heartbreak Hotel" (which was inspired by a suicide note printed in the Miami Herald), most of these cuts have become indelibly etched into the fabric of pop culture and each has a unique story behind it. "Love Me Tender" has its origins in the Civil War ballad "Aura Lee," "It's Now Or Never" found Elvis Americanizing the Neapolitan ballad "O Sole Mio," and "Wooden Heart" likewise was converted from a German children's song.
This Memphis native's choice of artists to cover was equally intriguing and includes Hollywood legend Al Jolson ("Are You Lonesome Tonight?"), New Orleans soul shouter Smiley Lewis ("One Night"), blues great Big Mama Thornton ("Hound Dog"), and country titan Hank Snow ("[Now And Then There's] A Fool Such As I"). Further testimony of Presley's long-lasting appeal is the inclusion of the JXL Radio Edit Remix of "A Little Less Conversation," a UK #1 that not only enabled Elvis to have more chart-toppers than The Beatles, but also became a hit in a number of other countries including the United States.
RCA and the Elvis estate made no bones about their intention on replicating the blockbuster success of the Beatles' The Beatles 1 with their own single-disc collection of number one hits -- hence, the 2002 release of Elvis: 30 #1 Hits. The idea of collecting all the number one hits is simple enough, but there are problems inherent with the concept, not the least of which is that RCA did this once before. Unlike the Beatles, who went through numerous changes in just seven years of recording, Elvis had nearly three times as many years' worth of material and hits to choose from. Also, he hit on a number of different charts -- not just pop, but ...

| | Busted CD (1990) Bonus Tracks; Japan
Antics album
$31.09 This version of Busted's self-titled album includes two extra tracks not available on the original release.
Busted's US debut grabs the strongest tracks from the youthful British trio's two albums, their 2002 debut (also called Busted) and its rapid-fire follow-up Present for Everyone, both of which were smash hits in their home country. Sort of a rock reinvention of the boy band concept, Busted's James Bourne, Mattie Jay, and Charlie Simpson match slick melodies to blaring guitars and lyrics about being young, hooking up, and having crushes on stewardesses and schoolteachers. In addition to the singles "What I Go to School For", "Air Hostess", "Year 3000", and "Crashed the Wedding", Busted includes the boys' symphonic pop version of the Thunderbirds theme (written for the 2004 live-action film adaptation) and a run through the Undertones classic "Teenage Kicks". The latter track's a little too processed, but some raucous lead guitar and strong verses from each Busted principal help make it a fun romp. ~ Johnny Loftus
Busted's eponymous debut made a pretty big splash in the trio's native U.K., where its next-generation sound found immediate favor with kids stuck in a growth spurt between Boyzone and blink-182 allegiances. Principals Mattie Jay, James Bourne, and Charlie Simpson slide smoothly between material like "Psycho Girl" and "Losing You" -- dull teen pop ballads with the sickeningly overwrought vocals typical of the genre -- and relatively more creative stuff that punches up the formula with pop-ternative production and smirking, yet still squeaky clean lyrical witticisms. At best (lead single "What I Go to School For"; the mindless future frolic of "Year 3000") it's BBMak with better cheekbones; at worst, Busted is a neutered Sum 41. Sure, "Crash and Burn" is stippled with muted electric guitar riffs and an amplified, almost-the-real-thing drum machine. But its spurned suitor sob story ("I asked you to dance at the disco/BUT YOU SAID NO!") is right out of the pop star handbook. At least those guys in Sum 41 rhymed "El Nińo" with "drinking in the back ...
