Better known to American as Dragon Warrior 8, Dragon Quest VIII brings the long-running RPG series to the PlayStation 2 for the first time. In it, players are able to capture monsters that inhabit the battlefield. These beasts differ from the creatures you'd normally encounter in battles, as they have special names and abilities unique to them. Once a monster has been scouted, it's added to a growing arsenal of creatures that can then be assembled into teams of three for use as support characters in battle. Outside of using these monster teams in combat, players can also use them in Dragon Quest VIII's "Monster Battle Road" tournament grounds. Other new additions to the series include full day and night cycles for towns, first-person conversations, and the ability to look around the 3D environments. Dragon Quest VIII: Journey Of The Cursed King Games Review Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Best RPG 2005 If you're a fan of Jap RPG's like Final Fantasy or Shadow Hearts you will love this game. It is so playable and addictive, don't let the cartoon graphics or the seemingly straightforward plot put you off, this game is huge and wonderfully balenced with great characters and addictive gameplay, this really is the best RPG on any platform since FFX, the perfect game for xmas. Loved it! I highly recommend buying this game. It's a long one, but well worth your time! The storyline is good and the action is never boring. Give it a try and you'll see it's a great game! Submitted by Shane (Cullman, AL, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.
Exceptional Game This is as good as it gets within it's genre. It's a good old school style leveling up and dungeon crawling game with a few interesting twists and upgrades thrown in for good measure. A+ in overall presentation, A+ in ambition, and A+ in game play. Many of us still like to take on one of these old style epic journeys once in a while and this is an excellent one. I hope they never stop making them --- but they are becoming rare. Submitted by raygunsky (Bloch Lake, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Above Average Level Builder I really did anticipate this game heavily. After all Dragon Warrior on the NES is what got me hooked on RPGs years ago.
The game is pretty to look at with decent cell-shading. The battle system is pretty straight forward Dungeon-crawling. Gameplay is open-ended and vast. The map itself is large with a lot of unrewarding territory to explore. The enemies are sightable so at least you can pick and choose your battles.
The alchemy pot is an interesting idea and absolutely necessary for achieving the best weapons in the game. However this did cause my 1st Gen PS2 to start the death clicking.....and ultimately need repair once again.
The plot is well done but comes across as kiddy. It doesn't seem the developers were willing to admit that this game was only going to appeal to those over 20. And instead chose to aim at 11-14 year olds. I enjoyed the voice acting...and Jessica's assets....the bad guy jester Dhoulmagus wasn't exactly frightful.
The monster arena was also a welcome diversion.
My major gripe is that I found myself being underleveled most of the time and having to run around for hours level building and gathering money. While I usually don't mind this but it was rather excessive. There was no easy way or area to do either in a timely manner (don't give me that Isle of Neos Gold Golem crap either). IMO this really affected the overall feel of the game and as I got to the end boss was completely annihiliated repeatedley (and yes I had all the best weapons and armor and all of the Level 100 skills). I have yet to bother picking it back up to level up again and beat the end boss. Instead I have moved on and beat a game with a much better pace in Grandia III. At some point in time I suppose I will finish it but an otherwise great game is ruined IMO by an obvious pacing flaw that Square seems to run into quite a bit.
This could have been a great game with a little more work. Submitted by harmfuljays (22 Acacia Ave.) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Dragon Quest VIII: Journey Of The Cursed King Hints For alchemical processes, the game measures the distance your buttwad hero travels. To speed up the concoction, do your alchemical mix and locate a house or space where your hero can walk against the wall or corner. Tilt the joystick off center to get your hero moving and keep it steady. You can use rubber bands, an eraser, paper clips, or just rest your PS2 controller on its "legs" and flip it so the sticks are kept off center to do this.
Now you can leave it and do something else (like your homework). When you come back, your mixture will be finished done. Most mixes takes only about 3 to 4 minutes real time using this method.
