AFTERNOON OWLS, the album from The Kingsbury Manx, features "Half Man" and "Perfect Record."
The Kingsbury Manx's third release is a five-song EP that reveals a subtle shift in the band's sound. The layered dreamy neo-shoegaze feel of the first two records has been replaced with a jolt of rural psychedelia and instrumental variety. The breathy, harmonically rich vocals are still present, but elsewhere the record is liberally flavored with banjos, slides, timpani, electric pianos, and synthesizers. (A quick and dirty comparison would be Beachwood Sparks with better vocals or maybe Wilco with their pretensions surgically removed.) All of which would be a waste if the songs were lame. The Manx write solid songs, not flashy or catchy, but satisfyingly sturdy, the standouts being the perky, poppy "Over the Waves" and the vastly dreamy, acoustic guitar-based ballad "We're on the Way," which sounds a bit like America. Not enough bands sound like America these days. Listening to Afternoon Owls is very pleasant way to spend 16 minutes. ~ Tim Sendra

Afternoon Owls album
$5.99 The finest example of perfect disco pop, and a record that should be prescribed to musical snobs and manic depressives. The album is a true ambassador of what pop music can be. Jackson whoops and dances through a suite of unforgettable melodies that should be danced to with a smile on your face. Each track offers at least one musical hook, whether it is the beauty of 'Human Nature' (who can resist the 'dada dada da da da') ...
| | Slayer World Painted Blood CD (2009)
Afternoon Owls CD music
$10.39 Of the "big four" original thrash bands (the other three being Metallica, Anthrax, and Megadeth), Slayer was the least compromising and most consistent. As such, 2009's WORLD PAINTED BLOOD recalled more than the title of Slayer's 1986 masterpiece REIGN IN BLOOD; it shared the earlier album's ferocious aggression and trademark speed metal-meets-hardcore sound. Throughout, the sound is lean and mean, with bassist/vocalist Tom Araya's vocals ...

It's always a sign that a group is hot if they release a holiday album mere months after their debut. That's the case with *NSYNC. Their debut was released in America in late March, and in early December, Home for Christmas hit the shelves. Much of the album is devoted to newer material, with only a handful of songs qualifying as standards: "The Christmas Song," "The First Noel," and "O Holy Night." All of it is given the familiar *NSYNC sheen, alternating between slickly produced adult contemporary ballads and ...
| | Elvis Presley ELV1S: 30 # 1 Hits CD (2002) Remastered
Afternoon Owls songs
$10.39 Includes liner notes Peter Guralnick and Ernst Mikael Jorgensen.
Commemorating the 25th anniversary of Elvis Presley's death, 30 #1 HITS presents a career-spanning serving of the King's chart-toppers.
Dating back to "Heartbreak Hotel" (which was inspired by a suicide note printed in the Miami Herald), most of these cuts have become indelibly etched into the fabric of pop culture and each has a unique story behind it. "Love Me Tender" has its origins in the Civil War ballad "Aura Lee," "It's Now Or Never" found Elvis Americanizing the Neapolitan ballad "O Sole Mio," and "Wooden Heart" likewise was converted from a German children's song.
This Memphis native's choice of artists to cover was equally intriguing and includes Hollywood legend Al Jolson ("Are You Lonesome Tonight?"), New Orleans soul shouter Smiley Lewis ("One Night"), blues great Big Mama Thornton ("Hound Dog"), and country titan Hank Snow ("[Now And Then There's] A Fool Such As I"). Further testimony of Presley's long-lasting appeal is the inclusion of the JXL Radio Edit Remix of "A Little Less Conversation," a UK #1 that not only enabled Elvis to have more chart-toppers than ...

| | Creedence Clearwater Revival Chronicle: The 20 Greatest Hits CD (1976)
Afternoon Owls CD music
$10.45 Digitally remastered by Gary Hobish (1994, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California).
Digitally remastered by George Horn (Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California).
Digitally remastered by George Horn (1995, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California).
Guided, perhaps, by musical snobbery or roots-rock phobia, some people inexplicably don't like Creedence Clearwater Revival. As the kings of earnest country-inflected rock in an age when radical stances were de rigueur, CCR sported straight-ahead tunes, and may have seemed a bit unhip. But their music stands the test of time with a vengeance. For the doubtful listener, this outstanding, 20-track hits collection has evidence of their greatness in staggering abundance.
Though they produced several excellent albums, Creedence was predominantly a singles band, and CHRONICLE compiles many of their biggest hits. From the slowly building saunter of "Suzie Q" and the spooky, R&B-soaked "I Put a Spell on You" to the fierce "Fortunate Son" and the swampy blues of "Run Through the Jungle," CHRONICLE features the ensemble's signature tunes. Beautifully melancholy songs "Who'll Stop the Rain" and "Someday Never Comes" play off ...
| | Gentle Giant CD (1970)
Afternoon Owls music CDs
$12.79 Astonishingly daring debut album, not as focused or overpowering as King Crimson's first but still crashing down barriers and steamrolling expectations. The mix of medieval harmonies and electric rock got stronger on subsequent albums, but the music here is still pretty jarring. Kerry Minnear was probably the only prog rock keyboard player of the era who allowed his synthesizers to ...
| | Best Of Glass Tiger: Air Time CD (1993) Import
Afternoon Owls songs
$10.49 Glass Tiger first appeared in 1986, the year that Cutting Crew and the Outfield also debuted on pop radio. What do these bands have in common besides being from the same graduating class? Glass Tiger, like Cutting Crew and the Outfield, roamed between Top 40 rock and mainstream new wave. The Best of Glass Tiger: Air Time collects choice cuts from a group that is usually remembered for one song, "Don't Forget Me (When I'm Gone)." Probably inspired by Simple Minds' similarly titled "Don't You (Forget About Me)" a year earlier, "Don't Forget Me (When I'm Gone)" still sounds like Wham!, mainly because Alan Frew's vocals during the chorus are nearly identical to George Michael's. Bryan Adams' prominent cameo -- there's no mistaking that raspy voice -- epitomizes the band's desire to make it big, and for a little while Glass Tiger was on MTV's roll call. "Don't Forget Me (When I'm Gone)" is pure saccharine, '80s FM candy at its most frothy, but it's undeniably catchy. The ballad "Someday" is even sweeter. One can only imagine how many high ...
