After the debacle of the unauthorized release of the half-studio/half-live HEADKEEPER, Dave Mason left Blue Thumb Records in a huff and spent a bit of time in legal limbo before rebounding with 1973's Columbia debut IT'S LIKE YOU NEVER LEFT. Mellower than Mason's Blue Thumb work, these 10 songs recall the confessional singer-songwriter work of James Taylor or Joni Mitchell much more than they do the jazz-rock of Traffic's contemporaneous releases, giving that much more reason why Mason didn't participate in the group's '70s reunion.
From the opening "Baby...Please" to the tender title track closing the album, Mason's singing and playing are gently soulful. Importantly, the arrangements and production are nowhere near as sterile and slick as they would become on Mason's later Columbia releases, giving the songs room to breathe.
Repertoire reissue of 1973 album. Packaged in a digipak. 2005.

It's Like You Never Left album
$15.95 Recorded between 1975 and 1982. Includes liner notes by Bill Milkowski.
Digitally remastered by Mark Wilder and Seth Foster (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York).
Sony's third anthology of Return to Forever guitarist Al di Meola's Columbia Records years hits most of the bases and scores extra points by adding four previously unavailable live tracks that account for a whopping 40 minutes of playing time. The double disc features 16 songs from di Meola's seven albums for the label from 1975-1983 and successfully covers highlights from the jazz guitar fusionist's eclectic styles during his early career. Only 22 when his first solo album, ...
| | Johnny Winter And CD (1970)
It's Like You Never Left CD music
$10.49 Although Johnny Winter is primarily thought of as a Texas bluesman, 1970's JOHNNY WINTER AND is more of a blues-influenced rock & roll album. Backed by a tight and rocking band featuring ex-McCoys guitarist Rick Derringer--Winter's original backing band at this time were the "Hang On Sloopy" boys in their entirety, but the drummer and keyboardist were replaced just before the sessions started--the guitarist blasts through 11 songs with fire and verve.
The songs' relative brevity means that there's none of the bloated showboating that bogs down most guitar-boogie albums of this era; these tight arrangements feature complementary playing by all band members instead ...
| | Joe Jackson Look Sharp! CD (1979) Remastered
It's Like You Never Left music CDs
$7.69 Digitally remastered by Erick Labson at Universal Mastering Studios West, North Hollywood, California.
He burst onto the scene a couple of years later than Elvis Costello and Graham Parker, but Joe Jackson completed British rock's Angry Young Man trinity. As evidenced by his '79 debut, Jackson was a bit more eclectic than Parker or (early) Costello, and a touch ahead of both in terms of harmonic sophistication (though he downplayed his compositional chops at the beginning). The straight-ahead guitar-bass-drums trio that backed him on his first three albums was inspired by punk, but clearly more a part of the burgeoning new wave scene, ...
| | Hollies Greatest Hits (Epic) CD (1973) Remastered
It's Like You Never Left songs
$6.75 One of the best British Invasion bands, the Hollies were rightfully famous for their stellar harmonies (this is of course where Graham Nash honed his vocals skills) and keen sense of pop songcraft. This two-CD anthology from EMI covers the band's entire career, from their earliest (and probably best) incarnation in the 1960s up to an early 2000s recording made specifically for this collection, and including the band's various hits from the intervening decades.
While the non-chronological sequencing seems a bit random, it does highlight ...

| | Pretenders CDs (1980) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
It's Like You Never Left CD music
$21.29 Former rock critic Chrissie Hynde launched the Pretenders with an engaging, yet passive, version of the Kinks' "Stop Your Sobbing." She unveiled her own persona fully on The Pretenders, which contains a series of excellent compositions marked by her sensual vocals and brilliant sense of dynamics. An understanding of pop's structures allowed Hynde to exploit them to her own ends while sympathetic support, particularly that of guitarist James Honeyman-Scott, used the excitement of rock without reference to its cliches. Tough and opinionated, Chrissie Hynde's first declaration of independence established the formula she proceeded to follow.
