Another beautiful recording from the Dancing Cat label's Slack Key Guitar Masters series. This one pairs acoustic slack key by Cyril Pahinui (from the royal family of slack key) with steel from Bob Brozman. Occasionally, the speed can be impressive (something notable for slack key generally). A tiny bit of crossover can be heard once in a while, as in the Bonanza bits that show up in "Hawaiian Cowboy." What makes the album remarkable is really the way that the steel and slack key work together so flawlessly, combining the slide and the picking. It's interesting: not long after Senegal's Youssou N'Dour released his very different but celebrated Egypt, countryman Seck -- always a contender but never the champion -- came out with the relatively similar Orientation. Both were recorded a few years previously, and both take the singers into the Arabic world of swirling Egyptian strings in glorious fashion. Both come from the mbalax style, very rhythmic and powerful, and emerge into a world of flowing melody. What's most notable is that Seck, the lesser-known name, might have released the more satisfying disc. Seck has always had a more theatrical style, carrying the influence of Bollywood soundtracks, and it serves him particularly well here. Hoje is Gal Costa's first release on her new record label, Trama, and was released in the same year Gal turned 60. (It was released stateside a year later and retitled Today.) Most of the tracks are composed by young, still rather unknown composers such as Moisés Santana, Junio Barreto, Tito Bahiense, Moreno Veloso, Nuno Ramos, and Marcos Augusto. From Gal's own generation, the illustrious duo Caetano Veloso and Chico Buarque contribute with "Luto" and "Embebedado," respectively.
