Dolly Parton portrays a country music performer who meets an untimely demise, but cannot enter heaven until she performs a good deed back on earth - to get a workaholic widower and his children back together again for Christmas. Roddy McDowall and Allison Mack also star. Country music legend Dolly Parton lends her sunny charm to the heartwarming made-for-TV film UNLIKELY ANGEL. When hard-living barroom singer Ruby Diamond (Parton) dies in a car accident and meets St. Peter (Roddy McDowall) at the gates of heaven, the angel informs her that she must to return to earth to perform a selfless deed in order to gain admittance. Disguising herself as a nanny, Ruby soon insinuates herself into the joyless family life of workaholic widower Ben Bartilson (Lance Kerwin) and his children Sarah (Allison Mack) and Matthew (Eli Marienthal)--hoping to both heal the grief-stricken family and earn her heavenly wings in time for Christmas. Punctuated by Dolly musical numbers, UNLIKELY ANGEL is a Capra-esque affirmation of the holidays, love, and family. Unlikely Angel Reviews: "...Goofily earnest..."
-- Troy Patterson, Entertainment Weekly Unlikely Angel Movie Review Average Rating: (4.4 out of 5 stars) A Real Family Film I like that I don't have to worry about cuss words or nudity or violence in this film. Every one in the family can watch and be entertained. The theology is a little weak, but the message is very strong. Submitted by Judy (Monroe, La) Was This Review Helpful? A Christmas Tradition of mine This is a mixture of joy, sadness, delight, and the humor between Dolly and Roddy are a hoot! But what it comes down to, is a Family broken by the death of a wife and Mother who knew and felt Christmas is for love, family and God. This isn't a Santa movie. It's about giving to recieve her wings. Bring tissues and yes, you men will like it too. The music is classic Dolly, but the song "Unlikely Angel" is what sums up the feelings of this once broken now healing Family Submitted by sunni50 (Herriman, Utah) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
