Liner Note Author: Christopher Hoard. Photographers: Gary Husband; Lissa Wales; Eddie Coralnick; Glen LaFerman; Christopher Hoard. Unknown Contributor Role: John England. Allan Holdsworth's guitar prowess is well known in music circles, but he remains something less than a household name. His large and sometimes uneven discography has floated in and out of print, making it difficult for curious listeners to know where to start. Against the Clock is a double-disc collection taken from nine different albums, dating back to 1984. Holdsworth himself was behind the selections, so this collection finally represents what the artist himself feels are his finest recorded moments. The package is smartly sequenced as well; the first disc concentrates on guitar tracks while the second is devoted to Holdsworth's Synthaxe work (a guitar synthesizer with breath control). His extremely fast and fluid lines on guitar are extremely impressive and his synthaxe work opens up a whole new world of orchestral possibility for the guitar. Fusion fans take note: this is the place to start to get acquainted with Allan Holdsworth. ~ Sean Westergaard

A new Yes box is like a new Star Trek film. The same core group will buy it/see it whether it's crap or not, resulting in an endless cycle of repackaging that exploits the fans who made the franchises so popular in the first place. Yes have always seemed more of an industry than a band, so it comes as no surprise that their deeply rooted PR machine has dug up another collection of "previously unreleased ...

| | Trio Of Doom CD (2007)
Against The Clock
$8.99 Personnel: Jaco Pastorius (bass guitar); Tony Williams (drums); John McLaughlin (guitar). Anyone with even a passing interest in classic fusion and progressive jazz will want to own TRIO OF DOOM. Comprising three giants of the genre--guitarist John McLaughlin, drummer Tony Williams, and bassist Jaco Pastorius--Trio of Doom recorded both a studio session and a live set in 1979, and this 10-track disc contains selections from each, including Pastorius's "Continuum," McLaughlin's "Dark Prince," and Williams's "Drum Improvisation." Needless to say the playing is superb, and the energy--complex, knotted, and consistently pushing toward astral heights--is dazzling. Certainly the potential of a recording by this trio featuring guitarist John McLaughlin and drummer Tony Williams (both members ...
| | Dave Derby Even Further Behind CD (2003)
Against The Clock
$11.39 Dave Derby's musical career began auspiciously as the leader of 90's alt-rock heroes The Dambuilders, a band who was once decreed by Spin Magazine to be "the best unsigned band in America." A major label deal (East/West Atlantic) and several albums later, The Dambuilders disbanded, and soon after, Dave Derby recorded his first solo outing under the moniker Brilliantine. Since that time, he's been busy stockpiling even more of his trademark brilliant, but catchy tunes while touring and collaborating with artists such as Lloyd Cole and Jill Sobule. Even Further Behind is the Badman debut release from Dave Derby, and as the first album released under his name, it encompasses Dave's various musical personas into one glorious pop explosion. Produced by Michael Kotch,, Thom Monahan (Pernice Brothers, Beachwood Sparks), and Derby himself, Even Further Behind features performances by Lloyd Cole, Vitamin C, Phoebe Summersquash (Small Factory, Godrays), and many others. As an album, there's a cohesive thread of pop sentimentality and dynamic instrumentation underlying each song. However, from song to song, the tone and tune vacillate between somber melancholia to 80's new-wave urgency, and back again to straight-ahead pop dementia. Dreamy rock or down pop, whatever you call it, it's music for your every moodswing.
Personnel: Dave Derby (vocals, guitar, lap steel, keyboards, bass, percussion); Kendall Meade ...

Against The Clock
$11.49 Doveman: Thomas Bartlett (vocals, piano, keyboards, electronics); Sam Amidon (acoustic guitar, banjo); Shahazad Ismaily (electric guitar); Peter Exklund (cornet); Dougie Bowne (drums). Thomas Bartlett (aka Doveman) makes slo-mo, minimalist, bedroom-tape folk. The leisurely unspooling of his hushed words and pretty melodies over bare guitar or piano accompaniment will entrance listeners who aren't in a hurry for the big sing-along chorus. This 2007 release boasts a small increase of polish and shine from his 2005 debut, ...
