One of the top tenor saxophonists to emerge from England, Tubby Hayes could play as fast as Johnny Griffin, had his own hard bop sound, and accomplished a great deal in a short period of time before his death in 1973 at the age of 38. The rarities collected together on this IAJRC CD feature Hayes in top form. The first six selections match him with fellow tenor Ronnie Scott in a 1957-1959 quintet called the Jazz Couriers. Some of those performances are really burning (particularly "I Keep Thinking It's Thursday") and find the group recalling Sonny Stitt and Gene Ammons. Hayes also doubles on vibes quite effectively. Other numbers showcase him with the Harry South Orchestra, in great form with a quartet also including pianist Victor Feldman and heading big bands in 1961, 1965, and 1969. Even a 1972 version of "I Thought About You" (which was late in his brief life) finds Hayes playing in superb shape. Tubby Hayes deserves to be much better known for he was on the level of a Dexter Gordon. England's Late Jazz Great serves as a perfect introduction to his brand of boppish straight-ahead jazz. ~ Scott Yanow

This 17 track CD contains selected broadcast performances made between 1957 and 1972 by British jazz musician Tubby Hayes, who plays tenor saxophone, flute and vibes on various tracks. He is featured with his Quartet, Quintet, Jazz Couriers and Big Band

I was stunned my the success of Nothing Tasteful. I thought I'd put together a pretty good album considering it only took five days to record. My favorite song during the recording session was Caffeine Overdrive. Real nice driving, rocking beat, screaming guitar, everything I'm known for. Of course that one has received very little attention so far. My first positive feedback came on New Artists Radio. I punched in my name in a search engine and found out I'd made the NAR Top 40 chart. I was throughly stunned to find out the song that hit was Layinonthefloor. It is a quirky little blues number that really debated putting on the CD. In fact about a month after I cut the CD I wished I hadn't chosen it. About a month after that I found out it was at #33 after being #37 the week before. I followed it up the chart from #29 to #21 then #17 and then in the top ten and then the top five and finally it peaked at #2. There was like a thousand songs on NAR and mine was voted number 2!!! I was bummed when it didn't make it to number one but I guess I'll have wait for that to happen. Paul at Midnight Special Blues radio really liked a different song, the only other song with vocals which is called Cant Take It. He put that on the playlist for about two months and then pulled it out of the rotation. About two months after that he sent me an email saying he'd put it back in the playlist because he couldn't take not hearing it. That there was something "Lenonesque" about it. That's a real compliment. One of my favs on the CD is Cheeseball Blues. That's a reference to myself because I just don't take myself that seriously. I mean you listen to my recordings and you can just tell I'm a go with it kind of guy. Some people want to be in control of everything but for me it's all about getting out of the way and just going with the flow. That song was played ...
