Some of guitarist Robben Ford's weaknesses, such as song composition and vocals, are rectified or at least made less obvious, on this predominantly live release. On his fourth release for the Concord label, Ford is able to cherrypick better material from inconsistent albums, unearth choice covers, and generally broaden the music with his fiery playing. This, along with the natural energy generated by the stage environment, focuses attention on the guitarist's skills as a creative six-string bluesman who expands the narrow confines of the genre by adding soul and jazz influences. This compilation features 21 tracks from Gil Scott-Heron's first three long-players -- Small Talk at 125th and Lenox (1970), Pieces of a Man (1971), and Free Will (1972) -- all for producer Bob Thiele's Flying Dutchman label. Although Scott-Heron's seminal recordings consisted of his radical street poetry set to a bombast of conga accompaniment, he honed his prose into socially conscious R&B. This would heavily influence rap music nearly a decade prior to its fruition in the early '80s and 1990s. The original recitation version of "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" -- which comes off as militant as the more familiar instrumentally accompanied reading -- as well as the slice-of-life commentary title track "Small Talk at 125th and Lenox" appropriately represent Scott-Heron's first disc with an edgy political incorrectness taken directly from the soul of the American ghettos. Although the tone of his later work would become somewhat melodically tempered, the lyrical content remained in-your-face and wholly uncompromising. "The Rollo Dilworth Ensemble Project is a wonderful compilation of African American sacred music performed by an amazing diverse cast of musical artists. The solo artists are a special treat. The show stopping dramatic talents of Roberta Thomas, the unique coloratura soprano gifts of Felicia Coleman, and the warm lyric baritone voice of Milas Armour III are noteworthy. The project features gospel standards like "His Eye Is On The Sparrow" and "In The Upper Room" but also original new compositions by Rollo Dilworth and other singers/ composers that are a part of this touring ensemble. If this self-titled CD had more of a straight-ahead jazz outlook, it would be easy to describe Carol Welsman as a member of the Cool School; the Canadian singer favors the type of relaxed, subtle phrasing that June Christy, Helen Merrill and Chris Connor were known for in the '50s. But for the most part, this 2007 release (which was produced by Jimmy Haslip of Yellowjackets fame) is not straight-ahead jazz but rather, is best described as jazz-tinged pop/NAC singing along the lines of Basia, Marilyn Scott and Sade. The 50-minute CD does have its improvisatory moments; the Brazilian-flavored "Café" (a Welsman original) demonstrates that Welsman can scat and improvise effectively when she puts her mind to it. But pop dominates the album, and that isn't a problem because Welsman's pop -- although certainly light -- is not lightweight. Gary M Hall has written and performed music for forty years. He picked up a five-stringed Roy Rogers guitar at age 5 and had his first ephiphany. Ed Sullivan and The Beatles were the next lightning bolt.From the mid-70s to mid-90s, he played in various regularly performing bands, including Highway Call, Hot Lettuce, Opie, The Groove Dudes, The Raiders of Time, Tricky Dick and the Skandelles, Too Smooth, Al Chemical and the Pharmacox, and The VeeGees. Performing 120 - 150 nights a year, he's played bars, schools, auditoriums, foyers, the Great Outdoors, golf courses, and at least once inspired an audience to tear toilets off the walls. It was in the '70s that his Clapton-esque guitar style and tendency to walk into walls led to his baptism as Slowhead. In the mid-90s, Gary joined orchestras in various theatres in Nebraska (Lincoln & Omaha), on and offstage, with and without make-up. Gary rocked the house with “The Who’s Tommy”, “Grease”, “Hair”, “The Rocky Horror Show”, and “Footloose”, went jazzy with “Crazy for You”, shtick with “Hello, Dolly”, and Broadway with “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat”, “The Civil War”, “Pippin”, “Godspell”, “Children of Eden”, “Grapes of Wrath”, etc. Gary has directed music for several shows, and composed original music for others.
