Winner of the Special Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival, MANITO, directed by first time filmmaker Eric Eason, is a riveting story of two brothers set against the volatile backdrop of a changing inner city. Shot in cinema verit‚ style, MANITO reflects a community when it transformed from drugs and violence to one of the most vibrant Spanish-speaking communities in the U.S.

The Latino population of Manhattan's Washington Heights comes under the microscope in this fascinating portrayal of urban life from director Eric Eason. Manito (Leo Minaya) is an ambitious student, eager to escape his surroundings. Upon landing a full scholarship at Syracuse, Manito appears ready to realize his dreams. His older brother, Junior Moreno (Franky G), decides to throw his sibling a big party to celebrate, and it is on Junior that the film largely focuses. Trying to balance a job as a painter, keep his indiscretions a secret from his wife, and prevent his father from attending Manito's celebrations all prove to be a tough task for Junior, and these factors frequently send him into a violent rage. As the film builds to its crescendo, it appears that no member of the family is able to let old habits die easily, revealing some surprising plot twists and an undercurrent of violence that is both shocking and tragic. Director Eason's digital video images lend an almost documentary-like feel to this moving tale of life in a tough, rundown neighborhood. Minaya and Franky G give compelling performances as the film's two main protagonists, portraying a slice of life that is sad and disturbing in equal measures.

Manito Reviews:

"...MANITO, Eric Eason's debut feature, was made with very little money, a fair amount of skill and a great deal of heart....He has a quick-moving, incisive eye that captures little details of gesture and décor..." -- A. O. Scott, New York Times

"...As a dramatist Eason has a classicist's sense of structure and movement to complement his sense of the cinematic....A small film with a big impact..." -- Kevin Thomas, Los Angeles Times

"...Heartfelt, gloriously specific, chockfull of guts, and sputtering with raw life..." -- Daniel Fierman, Entertainment Weekly

This is the only Manuel Cabral video. Stars also making their debut in this video: Hector Gonzalez, Julissa Lopez, Jessica Morales.

3 stars The Shield meets Boston Public!
There are aspects of this film which are good but I would like to see, for once, a functional, educated, united Latin American family portrayed in a movie. I was born in Chile and live in Australia and I cannot identify with the family in Manito. It is the typical protrayal of the trash Latinos living in America. The ones who have had the opportunity to make something with their lives but instead decide to live like bums! Manito is everything that I am against and I hope the Latinos who have watched this in America open their eyes and decide to turn their lives around.

Esther
Esther DVD  (1985) Subtitled

Manito movie DVD
DVD $22.09  3 stars Top 500
ESTHER was Amos Gitai's first narrative feature, and it sets the agenda for many of the thematic concerns he would continue to address throughout his career. The film starts inauspiciously, as a low budget biblical drama. It tells the Old Testament tale of Esther, who saved the Jewish people from the manipulations of Haman, one of the King Xerxes' most trusted advisors. When Haman persuades Xerxes to have all the Jews of Persia slaughtered, Esther risks her own life to intervene, and the king reverses his pronouncement, allowing the Jews to slaughter all their enemies in the realm. Gitai's subtle, dark wit, a staple of his work, is on display here. And documentary elements continually creep into the frame. Jackhammers and sirens can be heard in the background. A pivotal scene takes place at a modern junk yard. This is an intentionally anachronistic work, and Gitai's true concerns are made clear by the tragic tone the film takes at the conclusion of the story, which, in traditional Judaism, would conversely have a celebratory tone. Then, during the powerful finale, the actors break character to describe their own ...
War At Home
War At Home DVD  (1979)

DVD $18.39
This riveting documentary vividly chronicles the antiwar protest movement of the 1960s and '70s, which grew into a genuine people's revolt as the Vietnam War escalated. Centered around the University of Wisconsin in Madison, the film incorporates a mixture of news and television reports--including advertisements and political announcements--harrowing footage of riots at the university, and interviews with activists, campus leaders, and local police. The film starts with a '63 newsreel that portrays Madison as the "number one spot to live," and gradually shows how the students' anger and outrage heats up. Their peaceful protests are ineffectual, and result in police brutality and riots. A prime example of this is the unprecedented violence at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago in '68. Ultimately, fringe student activism grew into a community, state, and nationwide outcry that was nonetheless unheard by a government who opted to "suppress the violence" of its citizens with tear gas and clubs rather than concede to their demands. Filled with fascinating archival footage and stirring songs of the era by artists such as Bob Dylan and Jefferson Airplane, this documentary from directors Glenn Silber ...

Francis Ford Coppola's directorial debut, produced by horror king Roger Corman, is a terror-filled tale of family ties chopped to pieces. DEMENTIA 13's opening scene of Louise and John Haloran alone on a boat drifting nowhere (as an Elvis Presley song plays hauntingly) is reminiscent of many Hitchcock films. Its 1963 release was just the beginning of what, for Coppola, would be a long career of helming chillingly powerful masterworks such as APOCALYPSE NOW and THE GODFATHER. Set in a spooky Irish castle, DEMENTIA 13 begins as the Haloran family gathers to memorialize the death of the youngest sister, Kathleen. While various family members plot and connive, an ax murderer ...
