Live In Wembley video
$29.15 Detroit's Cobo Hall on May 8, 1970, is the setting for Live in Detroit, the first complete concert performance on the Doors' own Bright Midnight label. This is the Doors the way they deserve to be remembered -- tight and overtly bluesy. However, that oversimplification unfairly discounts the multiple sonic detours made along the way. Strange but true, this is the very first complete concert recording by the Doors to be offered for mass consumption -- allowing for some poetic justice. Live in Detroit is an initial step in removing the rumor and innuendo regarding Jim Morrison's loss of ability to perform on stage -- with the threat of an impending legal trial. No, this isn't the same trippy, hippy, psychedelic band that raised eyebrows by singing "higher" on The Ed Sullivan Show. Similarly, the world had grown in the intervening years. While this set is chocked full of early favorites such as "Break on Through," "Light My Fire," and the rarely documented "The End," the Doors' souls are full of the blues. Snippets of Curtis Mayfield's "People Get Ready" and Robert Johnson's "Crossroads" connect and propel the band into live musical experiments. They also ...
| | Diamond Head Am I Evil CD (1987)
Live In Wembley film
$16.79 New Wave of British Heavy Metal heavyweights (and mainstream metal failures) Diamond Head were long overdue for a best-of anthology, and chances are Sanctuary's two-disc Am I Evil?: Anthology, although not exactly perfect, is about as good as anyone could have hoped for. Except the unusually poppy single "Sweet and Innocent," all of Diamond Head's first and finest, nameless album (commonly referred to as Lightning to the Nations) and its essential B-sides ("Shoot Out the Lights," "Play It Loud," etc.) are paraded before the court here -- to the continued wonderment of all who may hear them. And for all of their inherent faults, the far less satisfying songs chosen from sophomore disaster Borrowed Time ("In the Heat of the Night," the title track, etc.) manage to acquit themselves ever so slightly in retrospect's benevolent glare. Not so the desperately unsalvageable submissions (and too many of them, let it be said) culled from confused third opus Canterbury, which remain as indefensible today as they did then -- with the only possible exception being the somewhat classy "Knight of the Swords." ...
| | Patton Oswalt Feelin' Kinda Patton CD (2004)
Live In Wembley review
$11.85 "America is like a giant retarded trust fund kid"; "I was late to an ether frolic"; "Angie Dickinson could suck..." well, that last line's better left for Patton Oswalt himself to finish. Let's back up. An acerbically funny standup and underrated comedic actor, Oswalt finally gets his own album with Feelin' Kinda Patton, and there's a good chance Wal-Mart isn't stocking it. Speaking too quickly for your kidneys to process the laugh pain, Oswalt puts a pincer through the strata of American society, skewering everyone from the President and his curious motives, to decadent Hollywood producer Robert Evans, to gumpy Midwestern Fashion Bug workers naïvely laying '80s pop/soap opera discard Michael Damian behind the Tilt-A-Whirl. "That's the one thing I like about George Bush," he says in "Come On Apocalypse." "I really think he can get us into the Apocalypse." But while the Prez definitely raises Oswalt's hackles, his Bush bit only sets up a description of why it'd be so great to buy the farm during such an event. As he says, it's a better way to go than getting eaten by fire ants, right? There's a bit of David Cross in Oswalt's style, mostly in how effectively ...
| | Wet Animal CD (2005)
Live In Wembley DVD
$11.39 Although it's pretty clear cut which leading "stoner metal" acts lead the '70s and '90s (Black Sabbath and Kyuss, respectively), it's not as easy to pinpoint a leader of the pack from the '80s. But for many, Trouble would certainly be in consideration. Despite issuing some of the genre's most classic albums (namely 1984's Psalm 9), the Chicago band has never truly received its "props," so to speak. Not having issued a new album since 1995, the former Trouble men can be spotted elsewhere nowadays, including Wet Animal, which ...
