Ted Howe is a veteran jazz musician who seems to be treading on dangerous ground by tackling a Duke Ellington songbook, not exactly an original idea. The pianist was originally hired to choreograph his long-running Ellington program for a ballet performance by the Ruth Mitchell Dance Theatre in Atlanta. In the process of recording the music for the show's producer, he realized that he had a viable CD in the making. Howe chose ten pieces from Ellington's vast repertoire, but the pianist came up with some imaginative approaches, mixing various styles into each track. Accompanied by two talented musicians, bassist Neal Starkey (long a first-call player for visiting performers needing a local rhythm section) and drummer Jerry Fields, he dreams up a wild Latin chart for an extended workout of "Caravan" that showcases Fields to good effect. His playful side comes across in the whimsical take of "Sophisticated Lady." His perky interpretation of "It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)" utilizes his effective stride piano chops. His introduction to "Take the 'A' Train" suggests a locomotive getting underway, before venturing into more familiar bop variations of this famous theme song. It is refreshing to discover musicians the caliber of Ted Howe and his trio, who can find new ground to explore within well-known compositions by a jazz legend. ~ Ken Dryden

Ellington Music Review Average Rating: (3.7 out of 5 stars) great album Don't go by the first reviewer. This is a unique take on Ellington's material with excellent playing by Howe and his backup. Submitted by David (Cleveland, OH) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
BUY THIS CD NOW! This CD blew mind the first time I listened to it. Ted Howe is the best pianist I have heard from Atlanta. His Duke Ellington arrangements are innovative and exciting. Neal Starkey and Jerry Fields are also very talented musicians and they compliment his Ted's style very well. Anyone interested in jazz should definitely buy this CD. The recording sounds great too. Untalented Cronies
In addition, this lackluster musical attempt is not helped by Mr. Ted Howe's untalented cronies. Nothing can be done to save this train wreck! This is a real crash and burn for Ted Howe. I venture to say his career can never recover from this massive betrayal of Duke Ellington's memory. Submitted by wembly17 (Hawaii) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 0 of 1 found this helpful.

Purchase Ellington CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Don Friedman Waltz For Debby CD (2003)
Ellington album
$15.49 This trio date led by Don Friedman is comparable to a typical Bill Evans session in several ways. Joined by bassist George Mraz and drummer Lewis Nash, one hears three strong musicians interacting rather than a rhythm section playing follow-the-leader with the pianist. Secondly, Friedman, like Evans, loves playing great melodies. Finally, Friedman is a gifted composer, though his pieces are obviously not as well known as Evans' works. But the comparison ends there, as Friedman has a distinctive style of his own. The title track is obviously Evans' best-known composition, though Friedman's interpretation of it is more aggressive and features a melodic solo by Mraz as well. Friedman's lyrical side is readily apparent in his warm rendition of Michel Legrand's bittersweet ballad "You Must Believe in Spring." The pianist is at his most adventurous skirting around ...
| | Bob Mover Fatha's Day: An Earl Hines Songbook CD (2003)
Ellington CD music
$13.85 John Hicks' fifth tribute CD for High Note honors yet another pianist associated with the city of Pittsburgh, the great Earl Fatha Hines. Once again Hicks is joined by his favorite sidemen, bassist Dwayne Dolphin and drummer Cecil Brooks III. Like his earlier releases in this series, Hicks plays a number of songs written by, or indelibly associated with, the musician he salutes, though there are a couple of exceptions. Two tracks were leftovers from the sessions for Nightwind: An Erroll Garner Songbook, though one could have easily imagined how Hines might have approached the lovely ballad "Almost Spring," or Hicks' swinging blues on "Twelve Bars for Linton," which is dedicated to Garner's older but lesser-known brother. But the heart of this CD consists of the leader's enjoyable renditions of Hines' favorites. ...
| | Bill Cunliffe It's About Love CD (2003)
Ellington music CDs
$14.29 It's About Love, an acoustic post-bop date that pianist Bill Cunliffe co-leads with saxman Gary Foster, is subtitled The Music of Reed Kotler. Upon seeing that name, some listeners are bound to ask, "Who is Reed Kotler?" -- and the answer is that Kotler is a talented but underexposed jazz composer from the San Francisco Bay Area. Although Kotler isn't well known, Cunliffe and Foster obviously think highly of his work; It's About Love marks the second time the improvisers have devoted an entire album to his compositions. They have good taste; Kotler often writes attractive melodies, and it's nice to see some jazzmen acknowledging a lesser known composer instead of confining themselves to overdone Tin Pan Alley standards that have long since been beaten to death. (Does the jazz world really need 5,000 new recordings of "My Funny Valentine" in the 21st century?) As it turns out, Kotler's melodies are perfect for what Cunliffe and Foster ...

| | New Stories Circled By Hounds CD (1995)
Ellington CD music
$14.69 Originally released in 1994 and reissued on the Origin label, this is New Stories' initial foray into the studio. In addition to being a fine session in and of itself, it also served as a harbinger of what was to come for this Seattle-based group. There was a Grammy-nominated album with Mark Murphy, sessions with top sax players, including Don Lanphere, as well as more albums under their own name. Formed in 1988 and composed of pianist Marc Seales, bass player Doug Miller, and John Bishop on drums, the group is a study in introspection and intensity as they wend their way through a play list of pop and jazz standards and originals. The initial track, "The Gingi," sets the tone for the session. Seales' hard-working piano takes the lead with a foundation ...

| | Mac Dre Eveybody Ain't Able CD (2007)
Ellington songs
$9.35 Before his unfortunate death in 2004, the colorful hip-hop artist known as Mac Dre was one of the most respected figures in the Bay Area scene. Bringing together 17 collaborative cuts between Mac Dammit and Jay Tee of the group N2Deep, EVERYBODY AIN'T ABLE spans the two Bay Area giants' 15-year friendship. Baby Bash, the Looie Crew, PSD, Coolio (yup, he's still out there) Da Unda Dog, and C-Major, among many others, are featured on this set that pays tribute to the birth of the hyphy movement.
From the very first time I heard “Listen Up, I’m About To Get Dope”, I knew that Mac Dre would be a star. We first met sometime in the late 1980’s at Rated Z Records in downtown Vallejo. Dre was releasing songs that were being circulated on underground cassette tapes and was fast becoming on the Bay Areas biggest names. After he released his first official ...
