world by storm in the 1980s. Their mix of pop, soul, and reggae may not
have been unprecedented, but it certainly was a refreshing break from
the scads of soundalike New Wave bands cluttering up the airwaves. A
singles band nonpareil, Culture Club is well served by GREATEST HITS, a concise culling of their career highlights. While they were certainly
not without their festive moments (the lilting, calypso-tinged "I'll
Tumble 4 Ya," the singalong sunniness of "Karma Chameleon"), George and his pals were at their best on the more melancholy, midtempo tunes ("Do You Really Want to Hurt Me;" "Time"), where the Boy really got a chance to burn his torch at both ends. Decades later, Culture Club's best moments still stand up a hell of a lot better than many of their contemporaries' records.
Led by the notoriously androgynous Boy George, Culture Club took the

Greatest Hits album

| | Very Best Of Randy Travis CD (2004)
Greatest Hits CD music
$11.49 Randy Travis emerged in the 1980s at the forefront of country's New Traditionalist movement, with a sound that recalled classic country balladeers George Jones, Merle Haggard, and Lefty Frizzell. His pure, honest approach to heart-wrenching saloon songs resonated with country audiences in a major way, making him a star. This 20-song collection is a single-disc distillation of Travis's long, fruitful career, and is the perfect place to start exploring his work.
While there are some up-tempo honky-tonk numbers here, it's the slow-burn ballad that is Travis's stock in trade, and there's no shortage of those. From the tormented would-be philanderer of "On the Other Hand" (his first big hit) to the jilted lover of the heartbroken lament "It's Just a Matter of Time," Travis inhabits every song completely, with a voice deeper than anything this side of Tennessee Ernie Ford and full of unadorned emotion. The fact that Travis's career weathered the changes in the country scene long enough to merit an anthology such as this is a mark of both his enduring appeal and his substantive, unpretentious artistry.

| | Very Best Of Dwight Yoakam CD (2004)
Greatest Hits music CDs
$15.65 It's no coincidence that maverick country star Dwight Yoakam rose to prominence in Los Angeles during the 1980s, playing clubs with the likes of Los Lobos, X, and the Blasters. Yoakam's roots revivalism, which borrows equally from the Bakersfield honky-tonk of Buck Owens and vintage Sun Studios-era rockabilly, has much in common with a punk-inspired, back-to-basics approach. THE VERY ...

| | Fritz The Cat & Heavy Traffic Fritz The Cat/Heavy Traffic CD (1996) Original Soundtrack
Greatest Hits CD music
$9.65 The Fritz the Cat and Heavy Traffic cartoons may not have been great works of cinema, but they did break some ground in the early '70s inasmuch as they were adult-oriented animated features with controversial sexual content. Not much rock & roll, though, on the soundtracks, which combined typical early-'70s instrumental soul-jazz pieces with a few oldies and incidental music. Previously issued as two separate LPs, this CD reissues combines both of them onto one ...

$18.89 ONE WAY OUT can be seen as a sequel to the Allman Brothers Band's 2000 live album, PEAKIN' AT THE BEACON. Both albums were recorded within a couple of years of each other during the band's legendary annual Beacon residencies, but PEAKIN' marked the end of founding member Dickey Betts's tenure and mainly featured older material. In contrast, the group's first live album with new guitarist Derek Trucks (founding drummer Butch Trucks's nephew) draws much of its material from the '03 studio album, HITTIN' THE NOTE. Consequently, when the band lays ...

$18.99 "The Long Goodbye" "A gorgeous song cycle of true love in decline, the latest from the alt-country darling Susannah Weaver is a gem. Written with unflinching honesty and admirable simplicity...it's further argument that wider recognition for this artist is inevitable." Marty Hughley ~ The Oregonian ~ January, 2003 "With her new album Susannah Weaver, known as Little Sue, joins lost love to wisdom, creating something mysterious and new...One of the most beautiful albums that great community (Portland, Oregon) has ever been proud to call its own." Jeff Rosenberg ~ Willamette Week ~ November, 2002 "Her third record is her most nuanced and accomplished. The production exudes warmth and keeps the focus where it belongs: on Weaver's honky-tonk angel voice. Despite the melancholy, confessional lyrics of nearly every song, The Long Goodbye ...
