Bob Boguslaw: Bob Boguslaw; Aaron Clay (double bass); Chris Rose (percussion); Frank Russo , Pete Barrenbregge. Personnel: Bob Boguslaw (piano); Rob Levit (guitar); Pete Barrenbregge (saxophone); Frank Russo (drums, percussion); Christian Rose (percussion). Additional personnel: Glenn Paulson (percussion); Rob Levit. Audio Mixer: Alan Wonneberger. Recording information: Washington DC (2002). Bob Boguslaw is a musician who wears many hats. At the time of this recording session, he was active in the United States Marine Band and also worked with symphony orchestras, in the orchestras' accompanying touring musical companies, as well as playing pop and jazz. But this studio date is a gathering of old friends (including drummer Frank Russo and saxophonist Pete BarenBregge) concentrating primarily on the leader's compositions. "Snake Bit" is a funky opener that showcases an extended solo by bassist Aaron Clay. The Cuban flavor of his challenging "Do the Math" prominently features Russo and percussionist Chris Rose, though it is the leader's inventive solo section that serves as its focal point. "Gabrielle's Hand" is a gorgeous ballad that reflects on his daughter's transformation from childhood to becoming a young adult. Boguslaw has a bit of fun disguising the introduction to Cole Porter's "You Be So Nice to Come Home To," giving it a wistful air and playing it at a far slower tempo than most jazz musicians. Simon & Garfunkel's "Scarborough Fair" can be a dreadful bore in the wrong hands, but the pianist's scoring of it adds a few twists and is highlighted by BarenBregge's playful soprano sax. ~ Ken Dryden

Gabrielle's Hand
$15.15 (4 out of 5) Idiosyncratic vocalist and multi instrumentalist Denio shows her diversity. The "greatest hits" title is the usual joke, of course, 'cause Denio is a proudly independent fringe artist who will probably never crack the Top 40 - or even the Top 100. But she is also a very busy fringe artists, and much in demand, both as singer and musician, so this satisfying package is able to showcase her work with seven different groups, and as a solo artist. Denio's lyrics occasionally reveal a feminist orientation ("Birthing Chair Blues"), and she is capable of mordant observations about politics and the human condition, somewhat in the style of Laurie Anderson. But her specialty is an oblique kind of art song in which sound is as important as sense, and several of her vocals are in other languages.Denio has an impressive three-octave vocal range and flaunts her technique on tunes such as "Salvatore" and "You Never Call Me Anymore," but most of her vocal work on this CD is more restrained, and sometimes almost sweet. She is a founding member of the Billy Tipton Memorial Saxophone Quartet, and plays a mean sax, but also contributes accordion, bass, 12-string guitar and bamboo flute on several tracks. As the 19 pieces on Greatest Hits ultimately demonstrate, Denio is very difficult to categorize, but she always has something significant to say. - Bill Tilland (Alternative Press ...

Gabrielle's Hand
$46.59 GREY WILL FADE is a 2004 release by the indie-rock artist Charlotte Hatherley. Features two videos (NTSC/RC-2). CD contains 2 bonus tracks. CD contains bonus DVD. Having joined the successful Irish band Ash in 1997 as bass player, in 2004 Charlotte Hatherley felt it was time to attempt a first album of her own. The results justified her feeling that her own ideas were more expansive than the mostly straight-ahead rock approach of Ash. Supporting her in her self-assurance were two well established musicians (known from collaborations with PJ Harvey and many others), Eric Drew Feldman (playing keyboards and producing), and Rob Ellis (on drums). Moreover, the album was recorded not, as one would expect, in Britain, but in Los Angeles. Although the album proves that Hatherley is a talent in her own right, it does get off to a shaky start. It ...
