| | Kohei Mihara Cocolotica CD Kohei Mihara Discography of CDs
Tokyo's own Kohe Mihara spins things up a bit in the trip-hop scene with this, his debut album, Cocolotica. "Cocolo" translates roughly as "heart, mind, soul, and spirit," which is an apt description of what Mihara puts into the grooves of this record. Cocolotica swings from start to finish, without a bum track anywhere to be found, and across an amazing variety of beats, vibes, and textures. "Imitatrix," the second track, sets up a shuffling beat with a jazzy keyboard vamp over it. Mihara takes this template and injects some booty-moving percussion into the track, but keeps the beat blunted, as it were, for maximum head-nodding. Matter of fact, this album is a serious contender for the title of best head-nodding album ever made. It sounds great in headphones, and the beats are uniformly and uniquely interesting, constantly changing, never just looping. There's a hazy/smoky vibe in the air, evoking the ideal college dorm room. Cocolotica's standout track, though, is "Agalychnis Callidryas," a beautiful tune that merges Boards of Canada's sense of melody with Ulrich Schnauss' skill with beats. It is almost unfair to single out only a couple of the album's tracks, because each track, while perhaps structurally similar to the others, is so unique and compelling in its execution. This is one of 2005's better releases, and hopefully the start of something great from Kohe Mihara. ~ James Mason

| | R Kelly Untitled CD (2009)
Cocolotica CD music
$11.18 After his aborted, internet-leaked 2008 album, 12 PLAY: 4TH QUARTER, R. Kelly busied himself with guest spots for Beyonce, T-Pain, and Kanye West, even offering a free download on iTunes, "I Believe," inspired by the election of president Barack Obama. While such moves insured that Kelly would never stray far from the R&B throne he's occupied for more than a decade, his 2009 reboot of 12 PLAY, UNTITLED, should provide more than enough reason for fans to keep coming back for more. From Auto Tune-laden crowd pleasers like "Outta the Game" and "Crazy Night" to rousing club-oriented numbers like "Echo," Kelly downplays the slower "baby-making" jams this time around for a set of largely up-tempo songs, capped by a sultry collaboration with Keri Hilson ("Number One").

| | Pink Funhouse CD (2008) Explicit
Cocolotica music CDs
$8.99 Pink's insistently hooky, attitude-filled pop-rock has kept the singer a fixture on the radio and on singles charts since the early 2000s. The artist's fifth effort, FUNHOUSE, doesn't tamper with the formula: Pink's powerhouse vocals and in-your-face approach, backed by stadium-sized production, are in full effect on all 12 tracks. Even though the album deals primarily with aftermath of her divorce and includes serious moments of self-confrontation like "Sober," fans needn't worry that Pink has lost any of her chutzpah.
If anything, there's an increased sense of confidence and newfound liberation on tracks like the chest-thumping "So What" and the mischievous, bouncing "Bad Influence." In softer moments, like the ballad "I Don't Believe You" and the soulful "One Wrong Foot," Pink channels her personal experience into expressions that carry no less strength or muscle. But FUNHOUSE is a pop album first and foremost, and its catchy choruses, rollicking beats, and memorable vocal performances won't disappoint.

$10.45 THE BLUEPRINT was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Rap Album. "Izzo (H.O.V.A.)" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Rap Solo Performance.
"Song Cry" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Male Rap Solo Performance.
It's official. With his fifth album, aptly titled THE BLUEPRINT, Jay-Z has crowned himself the king of rap music. Laying a foundation for other MC's to follow, Jay Hova presents a lyrical masterpiece. And to make matters worse (for the competition, that is), he does so over a selection of the tightest beats (Jus Blaze, Timbaland) to come by hip-hop since fellow Brooklyn-ite Notorious B.I.G. changed the game. Jay-Z sets it off with a clear and concise statement of his purpose, "The Ruler's Back." From then on, each track dares rappers who tried to test his skills to answer back this time. There's also the cleverly worded (sort of a) love song "Girls, Girls, Girls," where Jay calls out every type of woman in the book. He limits the guest appearances to just one ...

| | Tricky Ruff Guide CD (2002)
Cocolotica album
$12.79 It's not sequenced in chronological order, but that's about the only flaw with Island's 2002 compilation, A Ruff Guide. Over the course of 17 tracks, the highlights from Tricky's Island albums unspool, hitting every single and many of the great album tracks (including cuts from the Nearly God album). Although this may seem like it'd be just for the fellow travelers -- the kind of casual fan that just wants the hits -- this is actually a very useful compilation for those that followed his career closely, since Tricky's albums after his brilliant debut Maxinquaye grew more erratic with each release. Therefore, this collection works really well as a collection of the moments where Tricky flashed his brilliance on uneven albums ("Broken Homes," "Tricky ...
