On his second CD as a leader, classically trained guitarist Ron Murray blends his background with jazz, bossa nova, and flamenco, in a mostly trio setting with bassist Marty Ballou and drummer Arti Dixson. He has a flair for the dramatic in his arrangement of the tearjerker song "Besame Mucho," complemented by Ballou's inventive electric bassline. Murray's jazzy side comes out in his freewheeling, breezy interpretation of Django Reinhardt's "Nuages." Henry Mancini's "Charade" is transformed into a lively flamenco, which would have delighted its composer. His reworkings of the pop-jazz hit "Don't Know Why" (written by Jesse Harris and rocketed to fame by Norah Jones' recording) and George Harrison's "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" are no less than astonishing. Harmonica player Ronald F. Murray (the leader's father, who makes his recording debut on this CD) and singer Michael Ciulla are added for the sensitive treatments of a pair of songs ("Corcovado" and "Vivo Sonhando") by bossa nova master Antonio Carlos Jobim, while the guitarist solos effectively on electric guitar. This entire release is a feast for fans of the guitar, regardless of background. ~ Ken Dryden

| | Bobby Hutcherson Wise One CD (2009)
Romanza
$15.05 Unlike Bobby Hutcherson's previous super mellow effort For Sentimental Reasons, this recording is charged with increased energy and vitality, inspired by the music of John Coltrane. Hutcherson plays the part of Coltrane's tenor and soprano sax with his vibraphone quite tastefully, while guitarist Anthony Wilson adds a new chordal dimension to the music far different than a woodwind instrument. Pianist Joe Gilman is perfectly matched with his bandmates, a supple, inventive, yet forceful musician who lends great depth to the background, or in tandem with the lead instruments. California drummer and longtime confrère of Hutcherson Eddie Marshall plays as well as ever, while bassist Glenn Richman is the much lesser known but able fifth wheel. The leader is as familiar as anyone with this music, being a survivor of the turbulent '60s jazz scene, where he was in the midst of helping change the music. Here he adds extraordinary taste and precision to these originals of Coltrane's, and standards the saxophonist made his ...

As British bands like Yes, ELP, and Genesis extended the borders of rock & roll, John McLaughlin had seized the opportunity to do the same with jazz. The first stars of the jazz/rock fusion camp, the Mahavishnu Orchestra played sellout concerts, sold records in quantities previously unheard of by jazz musicians, and captured a crossover ...
| | George Winston Autumn CD (1980) Windham Hill 20th Anniversary Edition
Romanza
$8.89 Principally recorded on June 19-20, 1980. Includes liner notes by George Winston.
AUTUMN was superstar new age pianist George Winston's first album to sell more than 1,000,000 copies. Listening to these spare, emotionally rich pieces, it's easy to understand why. But it's also clear what sets Winston apart from the hordes of other new age piano soloists: an insistent--occasionally even jarring--gothic sensibility that ...

| | Q-Ball Rivka CD (2004)
Romanza
$15.95 Q-Ball, the band, consists of music majors Matt Berger on guitars, keyboard and vocals, Chris Bly on drums, Ryan Allen on bass and Joe Pacitti on sax. Their inaugural effort, Rivka, features nine original compositions. The CD is dedicated to the memory of Matt's sister, Rebecca. Q-Ball's innovative, energetic style is influenced by the classic rock sound of Jimi Hendrix, the jam style of Phish and the rhythyms of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. The band successfully blends their talents into a unique, diverse sound which is all their own, yet with broad appeal. It rocks, but avoids overbearing heaviness and grunge. It's jazzy without losing structure. The lyrics are thoughtful, insightful and sometimes satiric, but never offensive and can be enjoyed by listeners of any age. The CD leads off with White Chocolate, a toe-tapping rocker inspired by juvenile infatuation with arm candy. Days Gone By is an expression of retired relationships ...
