Personnel: Tony DeSare (vocals, piano); Tony DeSare; Joe Palermo (guitar); Bob Howell, Bob Howell (tenor saxophone); John Swana (trumpet); Mike Lee (double bass); Brian Czach (drums, cymbals); Bucky Pizzarelli (guitar); Tedd Firth (piano); Vic Stevens (drums). Audio Mixer: Michael Bishop . Photographer: Bill Westmoreland. Singing jazz pianists haven't always gotten a fair shake from critics, but Tony DeSare's CD debut for Telarc demonstrates a potential to win them over while also appealing to a wider audience. Backed by a swinging band that includes veteran guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli, DeSare's warm vocals are complemented by his piano chops in the brisk workout of "Just in Time." It is also refreshing to hear a performer mine overlooked gems like Cy Coleman's "Baby Dream Your Dream," "We've Got a World That Swings," and a campy striding instrumental arrangement of the oldie "Five Foot Two, Eyes of Blue," in which Pizzarelli and bassist Mike Lee give the leader a run for his money with their respective solos. But the best surprise is the quality of DeSare's originals (most of which were jointly written with Lee). Jazz vocalists are always looking for new material despite the dearth of compelling songs emerging from modern Broadway musicals and the world of pop. DeSare offers up warm, swinging ballads like the appealing "Want You" (which adds John Swana's delicious muted trumpet) and the heartfelt "How Will I Say I Love You" (which adds a string section), and while "(I'd Have It All) If I Had Drew" may be a one-shot novelty due to its subject matter (as it was written for the independent film My Date With Drew), it still swings nicely. The poppish "Marry Me" is one track that jazz fans can bypass, but on the whole, there are plenty of reasons for them to snap up this rewarding CD. ~ Ken Dryden Tony DeSare Want You Songs Purchase Want You CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Ted Brown Free Spirit CD (1989) (Import) Netherlands

| | Roberta Gambarini Easy To Love CD (2006)
Want You
$13.49 Personnel: Roberta Gambarini (vocals); James Moody (vocals, saxophone); Gerald Clayton (piano); Joe La Barbera, Willie Jones III (drums). Italian vocalist Roberta Gambarini turns her attention to American standards on 2006'S EASY TO LOVE. Gambarini's voice is versatile and technically accomplished, but she balances perfectly between cool restraint and swinging sensuality. This balance serves her particularly well on her rendition of "Lover Man," where the singer manages to breathe new life into the chestnut. Ditto for "On the Sunny Side of the Street" and "Lover Come Back to Me," which show Gambarini's ease with bop and scat. A crack combo backs the artist on this set, making EASY TO LOVE a satisfying vocal jazz experience ...

Last First Kiss builds nicely upon vocalist/pianist Tony DeSare's superb 2005 debut album, Want You. Want You
$34.15 The North London family band Kitty, Daisy & Lewis will fill hearts of older listeners with hope and introduce their younger fans to the early American rock music that is the foundation for all of today's disposable pop. Their father Graeme is a music fanatic and introduced the trio to the sounds of Louis Jordan, Johnny Horton, Wynonie Harris, and Ray Charles, and the kids took it from there. They hunted down vintage instruments and recording equipment and recorded their self-titled album in the studio Lewis built in his bedroom. Most of the tunes on this 13-track expanded American edition of their British debut are covers, but the four originals, three by Lewis and two composed by all the siblings with their father, stand up to the eclectic collection of covers. The originals are "Buggin' Blues" with Daisy turning in a, pardon the cliché, blue, sassy vocal that belies her years and Lewis tickling the ivories like a maniac, "Baby Hold Me Back," a jump blues with gypsy rhythm guitar, subtle trumpet noodling a glockenspiel (?) ,and a driving primitive drumbeat, "Say You'll Be Mine," a Chicago-meets-London-blues groove with Lewis on lead vocals, and two instrumentals -- "Ride" a rockabilly romp featuring dad Graeme on guitar, and "Swinging Hawaii," a rockabilly-meets-Hawaiian thing with some tasty lapsteel and banjo from Lewis. They're all first-rate, if a bit rough, but on the covers they ...
