Though things were a bit looser in post-punk and New Wave circles, mainstream rock in the late-1970s/early-'80s was largely a man's game, with females chauvinistically shunted off to ancillary status. Pat Benatar played a major role in changing the AOR gender dynamic. Ruling the radio for a number of years, her belting vocal style and hard-rocking hits defined an era for many, as exemplified on GREATEST HITS. With their charging guitars and fiery vocals, the likes of "Heartbreaker" and "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" bear the influence of Led Zeppelin and AC/DC streamlined for the New Wave era, shot through with concision and a pronounced pop sensibility. Benatar's approach expanded as the '80s rolled on; "Shadows of the Night," penned by cult power-popper D.L. Byron, is an elegant power-ballad tour de force. Later tracks such as "Love is a Battlefield" and "Le Bel Age" incorporate synthesizer and slicker production, taking a decidedly poppier stance. No matter the musical mode, Benatar's voice sails through strong and crystal-clear, piling up the hits as it goes.
Personnel: Pat Benatar (vocals); Scott St. Clair Sheets (guitar); Alan Pasqua (piano); Kevin Savigar, Charlie Giordano (keyboards); Fernando Saunders, Donnie Mossov (bass instrument); Myron Grombacher, Glen Alexander Hamilton (drums); Keith Olsen (tambourine); Frank Linx, Neil Giraldo, Roger Capps (background vocals).
Pat Benatar Greatest Hits Songs Greatest Hits Music Review Average Rating: (4.7 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Was she really this good??? I had all Ms. Benatar's albums on vinyl, and since my player broke 5 or 6 years ago I haven't listened to anything other than "Gravity's Rainbow" (the only one I had on cd). After listening to this I realised, MY GOD she was good, no wonder I fell so madly in love with her (or was it lust). It's just PERFECT from start to finish. Submitted by Whittster (Gloucs. Complete, Great Collection This is the complete collection of the 80's influential artist. Listening to this CD gives one an appreciation of Pat's vocal range and how she can sing power ballads or sing a song making a stand. Her husband, the outstanding Neil Giraldo is also extraordinary as guitarist and very creative.
Far better product than the previous "Best Shots" CD. You get the staples such as "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" and "Love is A Battlefield". There are twenty great songs on here, this CD is the perfect way to collect the works of a lady who will hopefully soon be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. $6.39 When Jon Anderson rejoined Yes after DRAMA, he was inserting himself into an unusual situation. Keyboardist Geoff Downes and longtime guitarist Steve Howe had left to form Asia with prog rock vets John Wetton (King Crimson, Roxy Music etc.) and Carl Palmer (ELP). Chris Squire and Alan White brought original Yes keysman Tony Kaye back and recruited vibrant young Australian guitarist/vocalist/composer Trevor Rabin. The quartet had already begun writing and recording, but Anderson was able ...

$12.29 It's a little surprising for Seattle's Origin label, heavy on instrumentalists and local scene players, to take on a torch singer in its portfolio. However, L.A. area songstress Courtney Fortune shows stronger development than many of the average lounge singers, combining with contemporary big-band maestro Chris Walden for a number of compositions that highlight aspects outside of the standard jazz repertoire. Her self-penned "You're Starting to Feel Like Home" rolls out as a definite torch song, but with deeper tones hailing from the realm of contemporary pop and rock. Fortune's vocals are highlighted perfectly in this nontraditional format. Contrarily, the title track uses some intriguing guitar ideas, but then calls in more sweeping string arrangements to accompany Fortune, leading to a more traditional form. Her voice holds up well in this scenario, but some of the iconoclastic magic is missing. It's in the original compositions and less standard (for the lounge scene) ...
