Ron Blake is an excellent modern mainstream tenor saxophonist with a strong tone, a creative improvising style, and versatility. On this well-rounded CD, Blake digs into some of his best originals ("Tom Blake" is particularly memorable), Johnny Griffin's catchy "Dance of Passion," a lyrical version of "The Windmills of Your Mind," and a beautiful reading of "Pure Imagination." The backing ranges from straight-ahead in a 1960s John Coltrane vein to the use of electronics to creative funk rhythms and touches of fusion. Much of the set could have been recorded during 1965-1975, but it is not predictable, it doesn't lose the listener's interest, and the musicianship is top-notch. While the regular CD has 11 selections, a second limited-edition CD has remixed versions of three of the songs, with "Tom Blake" and "Dance of Passion" being "re-imagined" twice. Listeners who feel that the original date does not sound complete without louder bass and drums, electronic rhythms, and odd sound effects may enjoy the second CD, but others may find this to be an odd waste, a case where more is less. However, Sonic Tonic is worth acquiring for the first disc. ~ Scott Yanow

5 stars Blake's new release is jazz at its best!
Ron Blake’s “Sonic Tonic” is the most innovative and exceptional jazz release out right now. His unique fusion of r&b, funk and jazz with international sounds, really sets this album apart from traditional jazz albums. Part of the reason for this could be, is that it was produced by Me’Shell Ndegeocello, a very well-respected artist who has worked with everyone from Prince to the Rolling Stones, and grabbed nine Grammy nominations. You can definitely see Ndegeocello’s influence throughout the album, matching Blake’s killer saxophone with strong beats and exotic supporting instrumentation. Tracks like the mysterious “Dance of Passion” and the energy-charged “Chasing the Sun” are two of my favorites because of their pure excitement. For the more laidback listener there is the too cool “Shades of Brown,” and Willy Wonka inspired “Pure Imagination,” on which Blake plays with the theme from the classic film. The bonus disc of remixes is also amazing if you want to see jazz presented in a new and exciting form. No matter what your tastes, “Sonic Tonic” is a fun and stimulating album from start to finish, as well as a great example of the way the boundaries of traditional jazz can successfully be challenged.

Shirley Horn You Won't Forget Me CD  (1991)

Interestingly, Horn rarely takes a solo, but repeats the songs over and over, slightly changing the phrasing and continuously building on the piano to change the emphasis. Every cut is a masterpiece, but the stand out is the title cut. Drummer Steve Williams sets up a strange, repetitive quarter note ...

The record that started the bossa nova craze of the mid-'60s, GETZ-GILBERTO is a justly recognized classic. The disc's success is attributable to its spectacular personnel: the man who basically invented bossa nova, Antonio Carlos Jobim; the man who defined and perfected the genre, Joao Gilberto; his charmingly waifish-sounding wife, Astrud Gilberto; and American tenor saxophonist extraordinaire Stan Getz. Jobim plays guitar and piano; Getz provides remarkably lyrical, complementary lead lines, and Joao Gilberto plays and sings in Portuguese with the most understated, romantic, and artful vocal delivery imaginable. It's a hard combination to beat. Opening track "The Girl From Ipanema," a breezy, infectious Jobim composition with vocals by both Joao and Astrud, became one of the biggest (and most recognizable) hits of the era, and the single most popular Brazilian tune in America. The exquisite shuffle "Desafinado," the Joao-Astrud duet "Corcovado," and the eminently grooving "So Danco Samba" have gone on to become standards of both bossa nova and jazz, and the versions here are ...

Shirley Horn I Remember Miles CD  (1998)

CD $12.39  Top 500 Audio Samples Definitive Album
I REMEMBER MILES won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Performance. This stunning album is Shirley Horn's loving tribute to her friend and colleague, the legendary late Miles Davis. Davis was so taken by Horn's first album EMBERS AND ASHES that he forced The Village Vanguard to let her virtually-unknown trio open for him during his 1961 run there. Their friendship and admiration for each other's music lasted through the years, and Shirley Horn's 1991 recording YOU WON'T FORGET ME, was one of the last recordings Miles Davis made. Horn selected mostly ballads from Davis' Columbia Records catalogue for her tribute because, as she explains in the liner notes, Davis liked her to sing ballads, and ballads are Horn's specialty. She can slow down time in a unique and spellbinding way. Her sultry and smoky vocals are intimate and conversational, relying on odd metered timing and silence, rather than volume, to make an emotional point. This album's knock out punch is the epic (over 10 minutes ...

Recorded between 1973 & 1983. Includes liner notes by Leo Sacks, Virginia Prescott, and William C, Rhoden. "These songs are as close as we came to perfection," says group founder and leader Maurice White in the liner notes to THE ESSENTIAL EARTH, WIND & FIRE. Given the quality of the music in this double-disc package, it's hard to argue. Remarkable for both its commercial success and its inventive hybrid of funk, soul, jazz, and African folk music (White's kalimba is featured as a solo instrument on "Evil," for example), Earth, Wind & Fire are deservedly regarded as one of the finest ensembles of the 1970s. A thorough ...

Don't Take Your Time
Erin Bode Don't Take Your Time CD  (2004)

Sonic Tonic songs
CD $14.39  4 stars Audio Samples
Erin Bode's national recording debut for Maxjazz is an impressive affair. The young singer, who is gifted with a sweet and clear voice, wanted to cover her favorite songs, so here she delves into rock, bluegrass, pop ballads, R&B, and standards from the Great American Songbook, and is backed by a very supportive rhythm section consisting of pianist Bruce Barth, bassist Larry Grenadier, and drummer Montez Coleman. Most of the first five tracks are eye-openers. She confidently opens the CD with a country-flavored original, "Don't Take Your Time," co-written and jointly arranged with Adam Maness, who also plays piano on this track (a bonus CD-Rom video track of a live studio performance of "Don't Take Your Time" is also included). The Beatles' "Here, There and Everywhere" has been performed in a jazz setting before, but Bode is one of a just a few jazz singers to record it, and Barth's imaginative arrangement is a great improvement over the typically overblown charts used elsewhere. She then switches gears to tackle Bill Monroe's mournful bluegrass ballad "In the Pines," multi-tracking a backing vocal in spots, and adding Adam Rogers' delicious acoustic slide guitar and Meg Okura's gritty violin. Rogers is also on-hand for Bode's funky take of Bob Dylan's "Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You." However, her performance of Cyndi ...
