Having explored a more organic '70s R&B sound on his 2003 release Soul Sessions, guitarist Jeff Golub returns to a more standard smooth jazz sound on Temptation. Still full of light but funky instrumental jazz, the album isn't as adventurous as his last outing. However, Golub is an adept improvisor and longtime fans should find much to enjoy here. Standout tracks include the Wes Montgomery homage "On the Wes Side," the mysteriously mellow Latin track "Metro Cafe," and the Sade-esque "Simple Pleasures." ~ Matt Collar

Temptation album
$7.59 Guitarist Peter White follows up his 2001 release Glow with more solid melodic smooth jazz on Confidential. Once again there is an amiable mix of quiet storm-ready ballads, up-tempo Latin numbers, and groove-oriented soundscapes. Joining White are such instrumental pop luminaries as trumpeter Chris Botti, keyboardist Brian Culbertson, and percussionist Paulinho Da Costa. While there are no particular surprises here, fans of ...
| | Norman Brown West Coast Coolin' CD (2004)
Temptation CD music
$9.09 As one of the six-string lite-jazz inheritors of the Wes Montgomery guitar-jazz mantle, Norman Brown continues to bridge the worlds of musical improvisation and contemporary R&B via the crisp WEST COAST COOLIN'. In following up the success of 2002's JUST CHILLIN', the Louisiana native continues to infuse more soul nuances into his music by recruiting producers James Poyser and Vikter Dupliax, better known for working with neo-soul stalwarts Jill Scott, D'Angelo, and Erykah Badu. The result is an airy yet intricate romp that finds Brown not only serving up a percolating reading of the Marvin Gaye classic "What's Going On," but doing equally well with the far funkier opener, "I Might," with its slightly hip-hop-flavored ...
| | Brian Culbertson It's On Tonight CD (2005)
Temptation music CDs
$11.99 With its seething, laid-back funk beats and steamy lyrics full of obvious references to romantic trysts, it doesn't get any sexier than Brian Culbertson's IT'S ON TONIGHT. A number of prominent crossover jazz artist lend their talents here. For example, the downtempo title track features a sensual R&B vocal from singer Will Downing. Later, saxophonist Boney James' mellifluous lines become the focus of "The Way You Feel." On "Secret Affair," relative newcomer Chris Botti plays Miles Davis-influenced riffs over a spacious one-chord vamp (and his use of a Harmon mute ...
| | Peter White Playin Favorites CD (2006)
Temptation songs
$8.99 For his tenth full-length album, Playin' Favourites, British smooth jazz giant Peter White decided to, as the title suggests, turn to some of his favorite tracks from the '60s, '70s, and '80s, giving each of them his own interpretation (he did a similar thing in 1994's Reflections). Working with longtime producer Paul Brown, as well as musicians Boney James, Rick Braun, and Dave Camp, among others, White successfully turns the 11 songs on Playin' Favourites into instant crossover jazz hits. Mainly this means adding horns and keyboards to the background while the guitarist lithely moves around from the melody into lush improvisationally based solos, rendering them much slicker and smoother than they were before (although granted, he didn't have to do much to turn Bacharach's James Bond classic "The Look of Love" into something so adult contemporary). For many of the songs White ...
