This is the only kennel to be in, the one that soothes a canine's frazzled nerves by playing the soothing silicon-wafer electronica of the Black Dog. As one of the leading lights of the early 90s IDM (intelligent dance music) movement, the trio calling themselves The Black Dog were responsible for some of the moments in the then-still-being-defined idiom of contemporary electronic music. And whether the concept of 'intelligent' dance music is itself an oxymoron and endlessly debated, it's unquestionably the consensus that the dark hounds of Warp-style beatmusic were some of the genre's leaders. This is music in love with 'revisionist' technology-sweeping synth filters, analog blips and bleeps, complex rhythm programming and, perhaps most importantly, endearing near-melodies. Sounds chirrup, chortle, chime, even caress the ear in a xenon heathaze of bubbling beatboxes and virtual landscapes. The triad that was the Dog would later split, with two-thirds becoming the equally enigmatic Plaid, but this studio-constructed pooch BYTES his way right into electronica's history books. $10.49 Based on actual diary accounts of several teenagers following the L.A. riots, FREEDOM WRITERS is the story of an idealistic teacher's attempts to make a difference in the lives of her at-risk students. Located in gang-ravaged Long Beach, California, Woodrow Wilson High is a hotbed of violence due to a voluntary integration program which brings Black, Latino, Asian, and White students together. Rather than having the desired effect of creating healthy diversity, this program breeds constant war between all parties involved, the result being daily gun shots, constant racial slurs, and gang violence.
Played largely by young unknowns, the freshman class in question is both naïve and wise beyond its years. While never ...

$10.09 America's most incendiary filmmaker, Michael Moore, returned in 2007 with this health-care-industry exposé. SICKO tackles material as controversial as the topics explored in Moore's other films, yet does so in a way that places the focus on ordinary Americans affected by the nation's health-care crisis. After providing some historical background on how our nation's medical care system became so ravaged and unfair, Moore interviews a series of individuals and families who have had their lives all but destroyed by the denial of care in the service of profit. While there are two sides to the gun-control debate and even a legitimate discourse for how to best wage the war on terror, ...
| | Jackopierce Decade: 1988-1998 CDs (1997)
Bytes music CDs
$25.35 After Jackopierce broke up, the bandmembers decided to release a greatest-hits album with rarities and live treats for their die-hard fans. The resulting Decade 1988-1998 is a two-CD collection of 39 album tracks, live performances, and unreleased songs from over the band's ten-year career. Decade 1988-1998 strikes a nice balance between being an introduction for the uninitiated and a reward for the completist. In fact, Cary Pierce and Jack O'Neill actively courted their fans' participation in making this final album. Jackopierce included a live cover of Bryan Adams' "Summer of '69," which is a treat for older fans, especially those outside the area where the band toured frequently. The first disc is largely acoustic, much like the band's early years. The collection starts with "Rain," the first song from the first CD. By the end, through the later-era live tracks, the listener is left with a feeling that Jackopierce did in fact evolve in creative ways through the group's ten years. That may be the best legacy for a band. Decade 1988-1998 also includes a guest appearance by Vertical Horizon's Matt Scannell. Because it came after the band's demise, Decade 1988-1998 is tinged with sadness, but does a good job of celebrating this small and largely unnoticed band's great music. Standout tracks include "Mexican Tune," "Vineyard [Remix]," and "Finest Hour." Sadly missing is fan favorite "Please Come to Boston" from Jackopierce's debut. ~ JT Griffith
Jackopierce was formed by Jack O'Neill and Cary Pierce in their hometown of Dallas, Texas in 1988. The acoustic duo quickly developed a loyal local following and soon began touring the country. Over the next ten years, Jackopierce toured the world (3 continents, 10 countries, 44 U.S. states) selling out venues everywhere they went. They shared stages with Dave Matthews Band, matchbox 20, Counting Crows, The Wallflowers, Vertical Horizon, Sheryl Crow, Jewel, Lyle Lovett, No Doubt, Collective Soul, Train, Semisonic and many others. During that time, they sold over 400,000 records (four independent albums and two on A&M Records).Jackopierce ended their ...

Editor: Scott Sloan.
In the notes in To: Elliott From: Portland, Expunged Records president Anthony Davis writes, "Elliott Smith was someone who told your sad story and made you feel like you were not alone." With this in mind, Davis set out to release a tribute album to the late singer, featuring covers from other Portland musicians (the city that Smith called home) with whom Smith's distinct, fragile style resonated and who counted themselves among his many fans. Tribute albums are always accompanied with much dissent, because almost never are the new versions of the songs better than the originals, but Smith's songs had touched too many people to not make one. Though die-hard fans will most certainly object ...
