| | Brooklyn Saxophone Quartet The Far Side Of Here CD Brooklyn Saxophone Quartet The Discography of CDs
The Brooklyn Sax Quartet: John O'Gallagher (soprano saxophone); Rudresh Mahanthappa, Sam Furnace (alto saxophone); David Bindman (tenor saxophone); Fred Ho (baritone saxophone). The Brooklyn Sax Quartet's playing is more conservative than that of the World Saxophone Quartet and certainly Rova, but it is far from predictable. Its range of styles spans from spirituals and fairly straight melody statements to some nearly free-form blowing. Even its interpretations of straight-ahead material is informed by the jazz innovations of recent times and there are no moments when it sounds as if the group is coasting. Tenor-saxophonist David Bindman and baritonist Fred Ho are the co-leaders and contributed most of the selections. John O'Gallagher's soprano is often a lead voice in the ensembles. The late altoist Sam Furnace is on half of the selections and succeeded by Rudresh Mahanthappa on the 2004 session. Whether it be originals based on ancient folk songs or Dizzy Gillespie's "A Night In Tunisia," this is a consistently colorful set of rewarding music. ~ Scott YanowDown Beat (p.79) - 3.5 stars out of 5 - "Rambunctious honking and rasping raised-fist chorales trump the sumptuous in the Brooklyn Sax Quartet."
