Riding high from such late-'70s classics as "Carolina Dreams" and "Together Forever," the Marshall Tucker Band appeared to be running on full cylinders heading into 1980. With the success and return to their cowboy roots on 1979's Running Like the Wind, many thought the tradition would continue with their next record. That said, Tenth was almost a 90ø turn for the band, favoring the slick, warm radio-friendly production and boogie rock à la the Doobie Brothers and other contemporaries. Things only go back to the ranch ever so slightly on the jam-friendly "Cattle Drive," which could easily be backdrop ... Marshall Tucker Band Tenth Songs Tenth Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Just So So . . . Listening to this CD is the first time I’ve ever heard the album. It’s unmistakable MTB, but not one of their better releases. I’ve never been a fan of Doug Gray’s vocals. He just does not have a good voice for a lead vocalist. I’ve always been able to tune his vocals out, more or less, and most all of their previous albums included at least 3 or 4 tunes with lead vocals done by one of the Caldwells. These were always the jewels of those albums – good tunes with good vocals. Well, all the lead vocals on this CD are done by . . . you guessed it – Doug Gray, with one exception. Toy Caldwell does lead vocals on the one song, and although anything is better without Gray’s vocals, even this one song is not one of Caldwell’s better tunes. Also there is one very short instrumental (with no vocals). By the way, as usual T.C. pretty much writes or co-writes all the material on the LP with one or two exceptions. I’m sure this release is considered a must-have for die-hard MTB fans; but if I’d have known only one song contained a non-Gray vocal, I would have passed.
