| | Tsar Band-Girls-Money CD Tsar Discography of CDs
(2 Customer Reviews)
On the evidence of his songwriting and performances in Tsar, it's clear that Jeff Whalen has been weaned on plenty of melody-rich pop classics (the Beatles, the Beach Boys), edgy punk (the Buzzcocks, the Dead Boys), glam (David Bowie, T. Rex), and lots of pleasure-button-pushing, hook-and-guitar-driven hard rock (Cheap Trick, Big Star, Nirvana). On Tsar's self-titled debut album, released in 2000, Whalen and co. synthesized these influences into a minor punk-pop gem that was sadly overlooked by the record-buying public. Five years and a label fiasco later, Tsar returned with their follow-up, BAND-GIRLS-MONEY, on TVT.
Tsar's relentless energy hasn't abated: If anything, the spastic, hard-rocking fun is cranked up several notches here. Additionally, BAND- GIRLS-MONEY sports rawer, more primitive production than TSAR; the amps seem like they've been turned up to ear-bleeding, sound-blurring levels. Though less refined and sonically crisp than its predecessor, the new sound should appeal to younger followers of driving, commercial punk-pop. Whalen still churns out irresistible hooks couched in slicing riffs and anthemic, singalong choruses and, with his band creating a rumbling chaos behind him, the tunes really fly. This is straight-up, high-energy fun with its rock & roll heart beating in the right place.

Band-Girls-Money album
$6.19 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra's "Summer Wine."

| | Drive-By Truckers Southern Rock Opera CDs (2001) Digipak
Band-Girls-Money CD music
$11.99 A sprawling two-disc set, the Drive-By Truckers' SOUTHERN ROCK OPERA is a cracked masterpiece that's enjoyable on several different levels. Hipsters might enjoy the giggly premise of a two-disc set devoted to a slightly altered retelling of the rise and fall of 1970s Southern rock icons Lynyrd Skynyrd. Progressive rock fans lamenting the modern era's relative lack of story-driven albums divided into "Act I" and ...
| | Mark Lanegan Bubblegum CD (2004)
Band-Girls-Money music CDs
$12.19 In between the release of FIELD SONGS and its follow-up, BUBBLEGUM, former Screaming Trees singer Mark Lanegan sang for hard-rock heroes both old (a reunited MC5) and new (Queens of the Stone Age), gaining both fans and famous friends in the process. Thus, all eyes were on Lanegan for BUBBLEGUM, which features guest shots by everyone from PJ Harvey and Queens leader Josh Homme to Izzy Stradlin and Duff McKagan of Guns N' Roses. Fortunately, all this attention doesn't seem to have fazed the sandpaper-voiced singer; despite the guest list, BUBBLEGUM is as dirty, gritty, and raw as anything in his catalog.
While much of Lanegan's previous solo work is a mix of languid folk-rock, gutter blues, and the kind of grunge-mutated 1960s-psych influences that powered the Screaming Trees, BUBBLEGUM is lean, angular, and occasionally almost avant-garde. Simple, driving, Stooges-like riffs and rhythms abet minimalistic organ lines, heavily treated vocals, and a ...
