| | Charlie Parker Complete Dial Masters CD Charlie Parker Discography of CDs
(1 Customer Review)
These four discs comprise the complete selection of alternate and master takes from Charlie Parker's Dial sessions in Hollywood and New York in 1946 and 1947 (plus an informal jam session from the home of Chuck Kopely in Los Angeles, shortly after Bird got out of the California State Hospital at Camarillo). This is the first time they've been available in one package since being issued on Warner Bros. in the late '70s. Individual discs containing the master takes alone are available from Stash as THE LEGENDARY DIAL MASTERS, VOL. 1 & 2.
Recorded between February 5, 1946 and December 17, 1947. Contains a booklet featuring track-by-track annotations, complete recording and personnel information, alternate titles, original source tunes and liner notes by Will Friedwald and Thomas Cunniffe.
Recorded between 1945 and 1947. Includes liner notes by J.G. Calvados.
This 39-track anthology collects all of the master takes saxophone legend Charlie Parker recorded for Dial Records, including "Ornithology."
In 1946 and 1947, Parker participated in nine sessions for the fledgling Dial Records and, in the process, recorded some of the most important music in the history of jazz. Parker virtually reinvented the language of the idiom--not only for the saxophone, but for all instruments. And it is in these sessions that Parker shines brightest, blowing his brilliant imagination into dazzlingly constructed lines of the highest harmonic complexity with the sharpest technical virtuosity.
It's hard to ask for a better track list. Some of the finest compositions of the bop era, many of which are penned by Parker, are here in their original, definitive versions. "Ornithology," "A Night In Tunisia," "Lover Man," "Relaxin' At Camarillo," and "Scrapple From The Apple" are only a few of the immortal classics that line the walls of this treasure trove. Naturally, the list of musicians participating in Parker's groups reads like a who's who of jazz: Dizzy Gillespie, Max Roach, Dodo Marmarosa, Duke Jordan, J.J. Johnson and a young Miles Davis, among others. If you can only buy one Charlie Parker recording, THE COMPLETE DIAL SESSIONS should be it. Thi
