Hank Thompson was a bona fide legend. His long career defied the odds, beginning as it did near the end of the Western Swing revolution in country music, and continuing well into the 1970s, where he shifted his focus a bit to become one of the great honky tonk songwriters. This 20-cut compilation on Richmond is a fine sampling of early Thompson favorites and forgotten classics that goes back to the '40s. While "Six Pack to Go" isn't here, plenty of essentials are, including "Honky Tonk Girl," the title track, "Hangover Heart," his own "When You're Lovin', You're Livin," "Rub-A-Dub-Dub," his burning hillbilly boogie reading of "John Henry," and many others. There isn't anything here that's truly rare, but in the CD era, most of this stuff is rather hard to find. This is a very solid compilation with great sound. ~ Thom Jurek Wild Side Of Life Review

This posthumous album (Frank Floyd died in 1984) stands as a tribute to the kind of talent that simply can't exist any more. Floyd came up on the now-defunct medicine show circuit, and that concept of holding and entertaining an audience shaped his music (and his patter, as is obvious from this), then recorded for Sun in 1954 -- the same year as Elvis. In spite of his name, he was more than a harmonica player; he was also a superb guitarist and a credible singer who possessed what might be called an individual way with the English language (listen to "Shoop-a-Boop-Adoodler" if you need proof). On this set, recorded live in Memphis schools and in the studio in 1979, there's a mix of plenty of originals and blues chestnuts like "Deep Elum Blues" and Howlin' Wolf's "Sittin' on Top of the World," along with very regional standards like "It Ain't Gonna Rain No Mo." The meat here is definitely in his own music, however, with songs like "The Great Medical Menagerist" and "Married Man's Blues" that seem to completely encapsulate his winning personality. I'm not talking about the backwoods of Arkansas, where he grew up before heading out on his own as a sapling boy, in 1922, to make his nightly homes in roadside ditches throughout the South. I'm talking about somewhere beyond place and time. I'm talking about nowhere. I'm talking about where the shades of the dead do their danse macabre and pass their jars of jake and meths to the living who have been drawn into the realm of those shades. You're lucky you're not from there. You're lucky that Harmonica Frank Floyd-current age: deceased-can take you there, can let you come and leave there at will. But you're lucky you're not from there. About forty-five years before Floyd was born, Charles Dickens wrote a novel called Our Mutual Friend, in which one of its characters, the poor old widow Betty Higden, comments of the foundling, Sloppy, whom she has adopted: "You mightn't think it, but Sloppy is a beautiful reader of a newspaper. He do the Police in different voices." By 1922, the year that young Floyd set out from Arkansas, T.S. Eliot had finished his draft of The Waste Land. Above the first lines of this poem, he set the words: HE DO THE POLICE IN DIFFERENT VOICES. After Ezra Pound edited, rewrote, and made greatness of Eliot's poem, these words would not appear. Yet how evocative they remain of the interweaving of elusive and obscure voices that is the realm of shades of The Waste Land. And how these words evoke the realm of shades that is where Frank Floyd and other music-makers of his day were from: that lost and occult realm of influences from the mysterious dark age that preceded the phonograph.
