| | Whitney Houston One Wish: The Holiday Album CD (2003)
Saturday Session CD music
$8.49 Whitney Houston's soulful, elastic voice was practically made to wrap around Christmas standards, but despite the naturalness of the match, ONE WISH, out for Christmas 2003, as the singer neared her third decade of performing, marks her first holiday album. What lies within shouldn't disappoint as she covers many familiar tunes with just a sprinkle of recent music, the sweet-as-sugar title track originally by Freddie Jackson.
While Houston's been through her ...

$10.09 THE PREACHER'S WIFE was nominated for a 1988 Grammy Award for Best R&B Album. "I Believe In You And Me" was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance.
That renaissance gal is at it again. As in THE BODYGUARD, Whitney Houston does double duty as star and soundtrack provider for THE PREACHER'S WIFE. Don't look for her to be sticking to the commercial pop-R&B sound that served her so well on her last soundtrack album, though. THE PREACHER'S WIFE finds Houston reaching back to her roots in gospel, and collaborating with some stellar gospel artists, including her mother, Cissy.
Several cuts here, including "Hold On, Help Is On The Way" and "I Go To The Rock," find the soulful Georgia Mass Choir supporting Houston in her return to the fold. On "He's All Over Me," Houston is joined by gospel great Shirley Caesar ...

| | Big Country Bluegrass Waiting At The Homeplace CD (2009)
Saturday Session album
$16.45 Since joining Hay Holler Records eight years ago, Big Country Bluegrass has produced eight excellent recordings, and Waiting At The Homeplace continues the trend. The group’s formula of mixing obscure and classic bluegrass songs with their new material has proven to be asuccessful one. Most often the band’s new songs come from the writing of Jimmy and Sue Trivette. This recording contains three originals by the Trivettes, and also an outstanding new instrumental by fiddler Billy Hawks. Billy’s wonderful fiddling is all over this recording, and his own “Phase One” is a fitting showcase for his talents. Jimmy and Sue co-authored the strong opening track, “Time To Say Goodbye,” and Jimmy’s “Welcome Home” is a fine new gospel gem. Teresa’s version of “Knee Deep In Loving You,” the mountain instrumental “John Henry,” and Jimmy’s powerful singing on “Stone Wall” are album standouts as well. “Larry’s Song” will quickly become a favorite for many long time Big Country fans. For over fifteen years, until “Lou Gehrig’s Disease” took him from the band, Larry Pennington was the group’s renowned banjo player and vocalist. Larry was sincerely well liked and respected by everyone who knew him, and Sue Trivette has written ...
| | Renegotiations: The Remixes CD (2006) Import
Saturday Session CD music
$9.79 It's doubtful that hip-hop fans were expecting anything good from a Black Eyed Peas remix EP circa 2006, especially coming after the deflated sellout that was 2005's Monkey Business. They'd better do themselves a favor, however, and check it out, since it includes not only two of the best hip-hop tracks from the album but also, for the remixes, what has to be called one of the best rap production casts ever assembled. The seven-track disc opens with the album track "Like That," a Tribe Called Quest tribute featuring Q-Tip, Talib Kweli, Cee-Lo, and John Legend. The other album version is "Audio Delite," but it's lost among the five remixes, which feature Erick Sermon, DJ Premier, Pete Rock, DJ Jazzy Jeff, and Large Professor. (At least the Black Eyed Peas were spending money on something other than clothes and choreographers.) Premier's breezing remix of "My Style" and Rock's funky "They Don't Want Music" (featuring James Brown) are the highlights, but the others aren't far behind. If ...

| | Milanese Extend CD (2006)
Saturday Session album
$12.18 A number of trainspotters have been asking themselves the same question when confronted by the multitudes of micro-genres appearing weekly (and often disappearing just as quickly) in modern music, and especially in the DJ/electronica realm: "What, exactly, is grime?" By consensus, grime is a down-and-dirty derivative of U.K. hip-hop, which in and of itself sounds almost nothing like U.S. hip-hop, and grime is also closely related to dub step, which is apparently hip-hop with dancehall reggae flavors and tech step dexterity. Or something like that. Which all boils down to a more relative question: "What, exactly, is Milanese? Linked inextricably to grime, Milanese sounds very little like dance club/commercial grime (and absolutely nothing like music from Milan!). On further inspection, it would become apparent that Milanese is a remix artist who may take his cues from grime, but is a jack-of-all-trades when it comes to stylistic pilferage, and he creates his ...
