Europe: Joey Tempest (vocals); John Norum (guitar); Mic Michaeli (keyboards); John Leven (bass guitar); Ian Haugland (drums).
They're baaack! Nearly a decade-and-a-half has passed since we last heard from one of hair metal's leading bands, Europe, and the group has returned with Start from the Dark. While the group has earned a bit of a bad rap over the years (their keyboard-heavy tale of Armageddon, "The Final Countdown," was voted one of the 'Most Awesomely Bad Songs of All Time' on VH1), there's no denying that under all the pretty boy good looks and pop hooks, Europe was a talented band -- especially when compared to the other similar acts of the era. Europe's latest sees the group toughen up their sound a bit (especially when compared to their aforementioned Final Countdown era), as guitarist John Norum's heavy riffs serve as the main focal point, not keyboards, especially on such tracks as "Got to Have Faith" and the title track. In fact, even when the band takes the volume down a notch, as on "Reason," they wisely no longer try to heighten the 'syrup factor' with keyboards. Fans longing for Europe's return should enjoy Start From the Dark, even if their sound may be a bit heavier nowadays. ~ Greg Prato

2 stars Better Off Dead
Just to show people that I am not a guy who slags albums because I like putting people/bands down, I gave this album a rating of two stars. Seeing that I really wanted to gave it a one and a half, I rounded the rating to the next highest number, and not down to the lower number (of stars). With that being said, I think this album pretty much sucks! There are not many albums out there that are so bad that it takes me two sessions to get through the whole thing, which was the case here. I have been a Europe fan since their S/T album, and can easily say that this sounds nothing like Europe. The bad thing is, is that this album doesn't sound like any of Europe's previous releases. The album doesn't even sound modern, someone should have told the boys from Sweden that grunge is no longer popular in the states (or anywhere else in the world). The music is very "grungey", and Joey Tempest sounds like he doing everything possible to try and sound like Layne Stanley or Eddie Vedder. The sound of the album is thin, and I don't hear the melodies that some of the reviewers have written about. If I had to compare this album to something, I would say that it sounds like Queensryche's 'Hear In The Now Frontier,' or Dokken's 'Shadow Life.' And we all now that these were the absolute low points for both bands. I am even wondering if 'Start From The Dark' is worst than the new Stryper album 'Reborn.' In one word, this album is "boring," and should be avoided at all costs. On a high note, the songs 'Start From The Dark' and 'My America' are quite good, but not enough to justify the price of this CD. Sadly Europe should have remained disbanded, as they didn't do anything but tarnish their name. I hope the payout was good boys, cause you just lost a fan.

4 stars A Great Musicians
This is a great return for this Nordic guys, The voice of Joy still good and good shape, the Jonh Norun fingers on the guitar are magic and the rest of the menbersbands made a good Job. Good songs like Hero, america Star from the dark etc. This album is diferent from the rest of Europe´s albums but you have to buy it.

4 stars Good Comeback
Great to see Europe come back with a harder style cd.Some fans won't like this cd because of not being commercial enuff like previous cds but as I see the Band have come full circle to the sound of the first few records with John Norum.Good to have them back.

5 stars Turn it UP!
This CD is so awesome. I absolutely love it and rock out to it anywhere and everywhere. If you love great guitar and have to have it loud.... this cd is definately one to turn all the way up!! I hope Europe continues the success and I know the next album will be even better. Joey's vocals are breathtaking and he and john's writing abilities are out of this world! Visit Knoxville guys! We love you!

3 stars for those who say sort of none sense things
Europe is a swedish band and the swedish bands never went bad. This album is one of the best. Is also a sign of the real mature trace that they made along this 10 years. The best, that´s for sure...

Wisconsin-based band's classic album from 1973 shows off their great hard rock & blues talents, very much in the style of the Eagles, Tongue & Deerfield - includes their Panda 45 tracks that were supposed to be on their never finished 2nd album Circus: Brett Peterson (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, banjo, dobro); Randy Glodowksi (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars); Fred Omernik (vocals, piano, Clavinet, organ, synthesizer); Wayne Kostroski (vocals, bass); Ray Cyr (drums, congas, percussion).
Recorded at American Music Studios, Sauk City, Wisconsin. Includes liner notes by Randy Glowdowski.
Personnel: Brett Peterson (vocals, guitar, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, dobro, banjo); Randy Gladowski (vocals, guitar, acoustic guitar); Fred Omernik (vocals, piano, Clavinet, organ, keyboards, synthesizer); Wayne Kestraski (vocals); Ray Cyr (drums, congas, percussion).
Audio Mixer: Barry Mraz.
Liner Note Author: Roger Maglio.
Recording information: American Music Studios, Sauk City, WI (1974).
Circus' only released album is something of a letdown. They attained considerable popularity on the bountiful Madison, WI, rock scene and then throughout the Midwest festival circuit due to their impressive live show and jamming capabilities. And the list of artists that they supported makes for a winning resume. But Circus is not nearly as interesting as albums by fellow scenesters SOUP or Tayles ...

Recording information: Avenue Hill; Hall Place Studios; The Gauci Rooms.
Photographer: Hood.
Calling Hood the post-rock Madonna would be a stretch, but it's a comparison worth considering. For well over a decade now, the Leeds band has been nothing if not attentive, picking up on new trends within their sphere, evaluating them, and incorporating the good ideas into their records as they simultaneously refine themselves -- all this while seeming to arrive at their songs with the finesse of a wayward drunk stumbling into a doorway that just happens to lead to a bar stool. ...

Eternal, Thy Grief Eternal, and Lord of Putrefaction: D&D characters? Possibly. But they're better known as the bands that preceded and eventually morphed into Electric Wizard, the ensemble that dominated if not out-and-out created the "stoner metal" genre. This compilation gathers some of the best tracks from these two bands, and the extreme, bass-heavy sound; fuzzed-out guitars; and Alastair Crowley-cum-Led Zep lyrics provide apt foreshadowing for what was to come. The is music for Black Masses and dark maguses.

Although it won't hold much interest for non-Electric Wizard fanatics, this singular compilation provides a fascinating glimpse into the fast-changing interests and fortunes of a struggling underground band -- not to mention one which had to move backwards in order to move forward. Confused? By this we mean stylistically, since the earliest group incarnation represented here, Lord of Putrefaction, took the crusty death metal sound of their 1991 split release with Mortal Remains ...
