| | Thelonious Monk At Carnegie Hall CD (2005)
Classic Jazz Archive music CDs
$13.75 On paper it seems as if such titanic and distinctive musical personalities as Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane might not mix very well, but this stellar set, recorded live at Carnegie Hall in 1957, plays almost like a blissful extended duet between the two (with support from a sensitive yet hard-swinging bassist and drummer). ...

Throughout his long career, vocalist Al Jarreau has blurred the lines between pop, jazz, and R&B. On the appropriately titled ALL I GOT, he continues to work that amalgam, tossing into hints of hip-hop, gospel (sometimes even in the same song, as on "Life Is"), and world music (the Nelson Mandela tribute "Jacaranda Bougainvillea"). Along the way, Jarreau manages to toss in a duet with Joe Cocker (the eminently soulful "Lost and Found"), dashes of Earth, Wind & Fire-style ...

Classic Jazz Archive songs
$16.19 A magnificent piece of archive scouring, Live Instrumentals 1969 was recorded during the month or so that Affinity vocalist Linda Hoyle spent recuperating from an operation on her vocal chords, leaving bandmates Mo Foster, Mike Jupp, Lynton Naiff, and Grant Serpell to fill their time with a month-long residency at Ronnie Scott's jazz club in London. Nine of the tracks here, including tumultuous jazz-rock versions of the Beatles' "A Day in the Life" (a staple of the like-minded Brian Auger's repertoire around the same time), and "Fever" were recorded there; four more were taken from a period-radio ...

Classic Jazz Archive album
$12.59 The concept of this long-awaited collection -- the first studio recording by the legendary jazz singer in 13 years -- is truly can't-miss, and certain to inspire a sentimental, loving response from her longtime fans and the jazz world in general. The story goes that at the tender age of 80, after recovering from a fall, alcohol-related injuries, and three years of hospitals and rehabs, she asked, "When are we going to make a new record?" Completed on O'Day's 86th birthday, the disc promises a wealth of good things for listeners eager to hear how she's doing these days -- a set of Great American Songbook songs that, with two exceptions ("Them There Eyes," "Is You Is"), she never recorded before and the involvement of legendary performers Joe Wilder (horns) and Eddie Locke (drums), as well as a great ensemble. Sad to say, however, that the self-parodying vibe of "Gimme a Pigfoot" (a tongue-in-cheek view of her former vices and piano players) extends to her well-intentioned but very strained, raspy, and thin vocals throughout. On that song, she obviously talk-sings intentionally, but ...
