| | Garbage Bleed Like Me CD - Import Garbage Discography of CDs
Garbage's mantra for BLEED LIKE ME could be "that which doesn't kill you only makes you stronger," given the emotional and creative upheaval this unit went through in the four years that elapsed between this disc and 2001's BEAUTIFUL GARBAGE. Following personal conflicts and health woes for both Butch Vig and Shirley Manson, the quartet stripped down its sound and amped up the guitars to create an angst-laced album reminiscent of the Breeders and Foo Fighters.
Apparently, bad circumstances make for great art, and this collection of songs is no exception. When Manson isn't purring lines like "Hey, baby can you bleed like me" over the moody synth washes of the title cut, she's striking a defiant pose over the Kim Deal-like bass lines of "Sex Is Not the Enemy." Elsewhere, the echoing guitars and rumbling bass of "Run Baby Run" bring to mind a delicious fusion of New Order and the Cure. Vig's longtime friend and associate Dave Grohl even puts in a memorable drumming appearance amid a wall of guitars on the roaring opening cut, "Bad Boyfriend." Energetic and cathartic, BLEED LIKE ME is a welcome return to form for Garbage.
Described as a thundering return to the band's original hard rock sound, `Bleed Like Me' features eleven tracks that return to the power and simplicity of their debut. The first single is the explosive `Why Do You Love Me'. Amongst the other highlights of the album are the dynamic opener `Bad Boyfriend', a heavy out and out rock song featuring a guest appearance from Dave Grohl on drums. Aside from Grohl, the album also features an additional guest in the shape of Beck bassist Justin Meldal-Johnsen. Japanese pressing of 2005 album scheduled to include one bonus track TBA. Wea.

| | M A Numminen Finnischer Tango: Tule Tanissmaan CD
Bleed Like Me
$29.95 Trikont is a label not unlike U.S.'s Rhino, except that all of the packages have the same integrity and they tend to go after more obscure material: much more. For average American white guys like me, who knew that tango music was and continues to be a big deal in Finland? I'm thinking, in my limited cultural view, South America, Carlos Gardel, Pablo El Grito, etc. But the Finns have legendary dancefloors where the ritual dance of love and death that is the tango in its altered European form is still danced in the 21st century. The Finns have their own legendary singers and composers of the music as well, and they are all featured here: Markus Allan, Olavi Virta, Reijo Taipale, Toivo Karki, and Reino Helismaa, and the great Eino Grön. The crazies at Trikont have set out not only to present Finnish tango to the rest of the world, but to come up with a definitive overview musically and historically with a handsome package and detailed liner notes in German and English on the history and development of the music and its performers. It appears they've done it. And if they haven't, only the most ardent Finnish authorities on the subject are going to know because there isn't another compilation like it in the world. Fins have altered the music significantly: for one, there ...

| | Bruthers Bad Way To Go CD (2003)
Bleed Like Me
$12.35 Considering the Bruthers released just one single, it took some digging to manufacture an entire album of material from their brief legacy. Sundazed, as usual, was up to the task, compiling the 11-track Bad Way to Go CD, all but two of the songs coming from previously unreleased studio recordings. Both sides of their sole 1966 45, "Bad Way to Go"/"Bad Love," are here of course, and "Bad Way to Go" is certainly the best of the bunch. Its tense, almost circus-like up-and-down riffs, archetypically snarling mid-'60s garage vocal, doom-clouded organ, and furious tempo changes make it one of the best '60s garage records to have escaped inclusion on the Nuggets box set. The previously unreleased "The Courtship of Rapunzel," recorded just a couple of months later, had a similarly manic-aggressive feel, though perhaps its roller coaster riffs were a little too similar to "Bad Way to Go" to raise it to the same level. A few more Alf Delia originals ...
