Yet another Bargrooves release, one among many. Like the others, Bargrooves: Metropolitan is comprised of fashionable packaging and two discs of laid-back house music mixed by Ben Sowton and a guest DJ, in this particular case the Soul Avengerz. If you're into this sort of house music (perhaps most comparable to the Naked Music series of mixes -- or if you really want to narrow it down and tag it, West Coast house), there's plenty to enjoy here. The mixing is unobtrusive and the tracks are smooth without exception, with some sexy vocal numbers coming in every so often. The thing is, it's hard to keep count of these Bargrooves mixes. You'd think Sowton and company were churning them out on an assembly line, given the frequency of release and the similarity of one to the next. While none of these are poor per se, none are exceptional, either. Heard one, heard them all for the most part. Still, a nice series overall for folks who can't get enough of this sort of music. ~ Jason Birchmeier
Following on from the Mimosa collection, bargrooves continues with the `taste and tastemakers' quartet, to bring you Metropolitan, the perfect soundtrack to the early evenings of winter. This time, bargrooves resident DJ, Ben Sowton, has invited the Soul Avengerz to guest mix CD2. Ben turns in a beautifully melodic mix, with highlight tracks and mixes from Atjazz, Physics and Soldiers of Twilight while The Soul Avengerz up the tempo a little with a mix that fits right in with the bargrooves vibe. Their mix includes some of their own exclusive material and remixes, as well as tracks from Wave, Soulfuric, Defected and Susu. The Bargrooves series is world-respected for its international cocktail of style and sophistication. Metropolitan follows in that tradition with a double disc set of deep sexy grooves. Seamless.

Bargrooves: Metropolitan album
$11.18 Last time around, Shakira touched upon so many styles she couldn't be contained on one album, splitting Oral Fixation in two. This time, she focuses on one sound only: a pulsating electro-disco that crosses all boundaries and welcomes all nationalities. Such concentration behooves Shakira, freeing her to release her inner She Wolf, a wild wacko who's as coo coo as she is carnal. And for as sexy as Shakira is -- crucially, her music is sexy too -- what really gives She Wolf its bite is her inspired nuttiness, how she laments that Matt Damon's not meant for her, and wishes her ex-lover and his new girl a horrible vacation where the room smells and the toilet doesn't flush. "Darling, it is no joke, this is lycanthropy," she sings on the title track with no small trace of humor, and this blend of cheerful weirdness and sick beats -- often supplied by the Neptunes, delivering tough, sensual rhythms in a way they haven't in a long time, but also John Hill and Wyclef ...

Bargrooves: Metropolitan music CDs
$7.19 Although the CD was supposedly "Recorded live at home in Augusta, Georgia with his bad self," these recordings come from two different sources: a live concert recorded at Augusta's Bell Auditorium in 1969, and a series of studio recordings that were doctored with audience noises and applause. The record, long considered a soul classic, actually features two different bands. The concert recordings feature Brown's band from the 1960s, while the studio songs feature Brown's then-new band, powered by Bootsy Collins on bass and Pelps "Catfish" Collins on guitar.
Whether these recordings are "live" or not is really not the point; Brown has never sung a calculated note in his life, and one would be hard-pressed to distinguish whether one of Brown's trademark howls was recorded ...
