Beautiful Intentions, the third solo album by former Spice Girl Melanie C, marked a turning point in the big-voiced pop star's career; it was the first album released on Melanie's own label, Red Girl Records, following her departure from Virgin Records. Thus, Melanie C was finally allowed to don the name "Indie Spice," which she had lingering around her for some time already. The new creative control that Melanie C had over her album broadened her horizons considerably; Melanie allowed herself to fly more freely on Intentions, giving her solo music -- which was always rock-tinged pop music -- a sharp new look. On Beautiful Intentions, Melanie C developed her style into an aggressive pop-angled album boasting heavy beats with dramatic rock swings doused in musical cyclones of energy. She borrowed qualities from other heavy-talented rock divas such as Anastacia to produce a more bombastic sampling this time around. Individually, the majority of the songs were well suited for radio, with strong lyrical support, thanks to Melanie, who co-wrote all but one track on the album. What's most exciting is how, on the album's choice ballads, Melanie C actually soars over the music and kicks Spice booty with terrific vocals; the poignant "First Day of My Life" is the strongest individual track, as Melanie glimmers with poise over simple yet classy music. Tracks like "Next Best Superstar" and "Beautiful Intentions" showcase Melanie C best in the pop light, and the remaining ten tracks all support her stunning voice with contemporary rock synthesized with pure pop. The final product is simply dazzling; and Beautiful Intentions is without a doubt the strongest solo album by any of the Spice Girls. Truth be told, it was one of the strongest solo pop albums of 2005, regardless of artist. ~ Matthew Chisling

Beautiful Intentions songs
$6.39 When Jon Anderson rejoined Yes after DRAMA, he was inserting himself into an unusual situation. Keyboardist Geoff Downes and longtime guitarist Steve Howe had left to form Asia with prog rock vets John Wetton (King Crimson, Roxy Music etc.) and Carl Palmer (ELP). Chris Squire and Alan White brought original Yes keysman Tony Kaye back and recruited vibrant young Australian guitarist/vocalist/composer Trevor Rabin. The quartet had already begun writing and recording, but Anderson was able to insert himself into the proceedings with such ease that the new combination sounds completely natural on 90125.
Mostly, the band was concerned with trimming the musical fat to keep pace with the onslaught of the 1980s. Thus, tracks like "Owner of a Lonely Heart" and "City of Love" are full of samples, splices and almost funky beats and riffs. The unusual time changes and complex riffs of tunes like "Changes" and "Cinema" leave little doubt that this is still a Yes album, but the band succeeds in giving their sound a contemporary overhaul on 90125.
A stunning self-reinvention by a band that many had given up for dead, 90125 is the album that introduced a whole new generation of listeners to Yes. Begun as Cinema, a new band by Chris Squire and Alan White, the project grew to include the slick production of Trevor Horn, the new blood (and distinctly '80s guitar sound) of Trevor Rabin, and eventually the trademark vocals of returning founder Jon Anderson. His late entry insured that Rabin and Horn had a heavy influence on the sound. The album also ...

Beautiful Intentions album
$18.39 The rare and sole album by the Ashes is worth seeking by folk-rock aficionados, though it's not truly essential, and not worth the high prices it commands on the collector market. It's low-key circa-1967-1968 folk-rock, highlighted by Pat Taylor's assured, stirring vocals. Like the Peanut Butter Conspiracy, there are bits of Los Angeles ...
