A rich playboy leads a life of destruction. Candice Bergen, Olivia de Havilland, and Ernest Borgnine. In THE ADVENTURERS, the trials and tribulations of the rich and famous take place against a backdrop of political intrigue. A young socialite, whose family was destroyed by an important government official, returns from exile and plots his revenge.
Set in anarchic South America, THE ADVENTURERS is a thunderously charged 1970s political action-thriller. Bekim Fehmiu stars as Dax Xenos, a troubled playboy whose politico father was killed during a revolution. Searching for enlightenment, Xenos travels from woman to woman in an attempt to cope with his tumultuous childhood. After having an affair with the older and refined widow Deborah Hadley (Olivia de Havilland), he switches gears and falls for the young and sultry Sue Ann Daley (Candice Bergen). The two have a child, but when tragedy strikes and their son is killed, Xenos breaks down and leaves her, opting to seek revenge on his father's murderer, Rojo (Alan Badel).
Produced as an end note to the 1960s, THE ADVENTURERS showcases some of the more risqué social trends of the time on both a micro (infidelity, drug use, debauchery, lesbianism) and macro (totalitarianism) scale and then attempts to explain their origins. In one of his darker films, director Lewis Gilbert manages to save viewers from the pitch blackness of utter despair by serving up some of his witty British-isms. Racy nudity and the well timed appearance of Ernest Borgnine as Fat Cat come as welcome bits of comedy relief in this otherwise bleak film. An underrated film that shares themes with works like Shakespeare's HAMLET and Gunter Grass's THE TIN DRUM, the overbearing melancholic truths of THE ADVENTURERS evoke both a crippling sadness for humanity and a hope for future generations to come.
The film is based on the novel, THE ADVENTURERS, by Harold Robbins.
According to VARIETY, although the screenplay is credited to Michael Hastings and Lewis Gilbert, at one point John Michael Hayes and Harold Robbins himself were set to do the adaptation. It is unclear whether or not they actually wrote anything; production on this film was delayed for several years.
Charles Aznavour is well-known as both an actor, particularly for his role in Traffaut's SHOOT THE PIANO PLAYER, and a popular French singer.
This is the only Thommy Berggren video. Adventurers Movie Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) Excellent though higly underrated!! I disagree with all the so-called critics, who branded this movie as a bomb!! I believe that they did not understand the message it wanted to relay! I found it deeply human and the hero Dax quite tragic. In the end when Ampara tells him that other countries have bloodshed, he replies yes but they learn, and we don't. I recommend it very highly to all movie lovers, and
I don't care what critics wrote, but Bekim Fehimu gives a wonderful performance, and like Fat Cat (Borganine - magnificent role) I think this time he took us safely across the mountains!! Don't miss it!! Submitted by y.ben-david (Givatayim, Israel.) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Excellent Movie I saw this movie many years ago, and it is a very good movie. The film is based on the novel, by Harold Robbins, whick makes for a Good Movie. I only wish it would be available on DVD, but the quality on the VHS is pretty good, since it is almost 3 hours it comes on two tapes which is good. Whit a great effort. My english is not enough for what you are asking me; that is why I have to be very brief.
The Adventurers is a movie really good, and is in excellent condicions; great sound and screenig and a very special team of international artists,(with the only exception of Bekin Fehmiu, who, in my opinion, was a bit short of gracefulness for his rol).
As I did watch the movie once only in 1972 in my country El Salvador, with subtitles in Spanish, I expecteded it here in the same way ; for that reason, I am a bit disappointed because, in addition to my poor English, I am almost totally deaf, and my wife, my only company, does not understand English at all.
But the movie is worthy of any effort. Submitted by eleucadio (Melbourne, Victoria - Australia.) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No This review is for a different format.

$9.85 Blake Edwards's return to the male-in-meltdown territory he explored in 10 and THAT'S LIFE stars John Ritter as unemployed writer Zach, who is not only suffering from writer's block, but his drinking is out of control, as is his obsessive womanizing, and, not surprisingly, his wife wants to end their marriage. To add to his problems, his house has just burned down, and his agent is knocking at death's door. But since this is a Blake Edwards comedy, Zach has enough charm and relative affluence to continue his pursuits, which the director regards with a bemused deatchment. One of his girlfriends sets his piano on fire, and another ...

$9.29 In 1952, a young medical student and a biochemist from Argentina set off on a road trip across South America. As they straddled their beaten up motorcycle, the men talked in awed tones of the sights they were about to experience. The record of their trip may have disappeared into the ether if one of the riders departing on that fateful day hadn't been the future insurrectionary figurehead of the Cuban revolution, Ernesto "Che" Guevara (played here by Gael Garcia Bernal). The young Che's companion on the trip was his best friend, Alberto Granado (Rodrigo de la Serna), with their simple goals being to enjoy themselves, and meet some girls along the way. As the trip unfolds at the behest of their spluttering motorcycle, the boys discover more about themselves than they ever imagined possible. Ernesto clings tightly to his ideals throughout, and delights in the opportunity to put them into practice. His refusal to spend the $20 provided by his girlfriend, Chichina Ferreyra (Mia Maestro), constantly angers his travelling companion ...
