Grand jazz master pianist and octogenarian Hank Jones is accompanied here by bassist George Mraz and drummer Dennis Mackrel. The program is a collection of jazz and pop standards that Jones has undoubtedly played countless times before, and it matters not a whit. His sense of refinement, elegance, and swing saturates the proceedings. Whether it's on the graceful cover of Al Foster's "Paulette" with its elongated spaces or on an uptown version of Monk's "Bemsha Swing," Jones is a supreme melodist. His readings of Ellington and Strayhorn here are beyond reverential and are journeys of subtle harmonic discovery (check out "Lotus Blossom"). The reading of Harold Mabern, Jr.'s "Grace of God (There but for the Grace of God)" is simply glorious. In a career full of winners, add this one to the list. ~ Thom Jurek

Composer songbook albums performed by jazz instrumentalists are nothing new, but pianist Bill Charlap's takes on the exuberant and tender tunes of Leonard Bernstein make for an inspired addition to this tradition. From the opening trill on drummer Kenny Washington's hi-hat, "Cool" (from WEST SIDE STORY) kicks off the proceedings, crackling with excitement. Jennifer Hall is best known for playing baritone sax with Jack Sheldon's big band for a decade and for her work throughout the Los Angeles jazz scene. This CD is an inspired idea for she performs a dozen songs associated with baritonist Gerry Mulligan (who composed all of the numbers except "Bernie's Tune") in a quintet. Two songs apiece match her with fellow baritonist Roger Neumann, the explosive trumpeter Carl Saunders, Tom Kubis on soprano, Terry Harrington (one tune apiece on clarinet and tenor), the exciting trombonist Scott Whitfield and veteran trumpeter Jack Sheldon who sings "Summer's Over." Among the many high points are the two baritones on "Five Brothers," Saunders romping on "Elevation," the interplay between clarinet and baritone on "Apple Core" and Whitfield's two appearances. But in reality each performance has its great and colorful moments. Jennifer Hall holds her own with her guests, the rhythm section of pianist Josh Nelson, bassist Dave Stone and drummer Santo Savino is solid and swinging and there is not a slow moment on the set.
