Delbert Bump Jazz Organ Trio: Delbert Bump Jazz Organ Trio; Steve Homan (guitar); Babatunde. Personnel: Delbert Bump Jazz Organ Trio (organ); Steve Homan (guitar); Babatunde (drums). Recording information: Banquet Sound Studios, Santa Rosa, CA. Photographer: Ken Rabiroff. Arrangers: Delbert Bump Jazz Organ Trio; Babatunde; Steve Homan. Although somewhat obscure, Delbert Bump is a fine organist in the tradition of Jimmy Smith. His bluesy and swinging style is soulful and perfectly suited to this set of mostly basic originals. Guitarist Steve Homan offers a contrasting solo voice and some solid rhythm playing while drummer Babtunde keeps the proceedings swinging with solid forward momentum. The music is a bit derivative and perhaps predictable, but it is enjoyable overall and easily recommended to fans of Jimmy Smith and the grooving jazz organists of the 1960s. ~ Scott Yanow Delbert Bump Trio Organ-Ization Songs | 1. | In the Zone |

Audio Mixer: Liberty Ellman. Recording information: Brooklyn Recording, Brooklyn, NY (11/2008). Henry Threadgill has, in the framework of abstract music, been a stalwart, spontaneous composer whose personal sound is near impossible to identify, or certainly codify. A listener who enjoys very challenged music would have difficulty in discerning what is made up or written out. The elusive nature of Threadgill's kind of progressive jazz has to confound even those most oriented to his quirky pieces. Where the quintet Zooid lands in this quirky quandary of pegging a signature sound is subject to guesswork, but it definitely has its own brand of concentrated ...

Organ-Ization
$15.09 Paul Motian: Paul Motian; Joe Lovano, Bill Frisell. Personnel: Paul Motian (drums); Bill Frisell (guitar); Dewey Redman, Joe Lovano (tenor saxophone). Additional personnel: Dewey Redman. Audio Remasterer: Adrian VonRipka. Recording information: RPM Recording Studios, New York, NY (06/1993). Photographer: Robert Lewis . Jazz drummer Paul Motian has been lauded by critics for both his subtle syncopations and uniquely asymmetrical sense of time. On this 1993 release, Trioism, Motian's musical attributes are complemented by the cockeyed guitar styling of Bill Frisell and the breathy tones of saxmen Joe Lovano and Dewey Redman. With "It Should Have Happened a Long Time Ago," the CD's opening track, Lovano, Frisell, and Motian gently slide into a druggy minor key verse. Saturated with dark colors and impregnated with an extended sense of time, this tune immerses the listener in the trio's moody core. On "In Remembrance of Things Past" -- the CD's eighth track and the only one on which Redman plays -- Frisell is showcased soloing over eerie feedback loops and Motian's groggy grooves. A first-rate work, Paul Motian's Trioism is one of those rare, successful ensemble performances that manages to both stir and calm the soul. ~ John Vallier Re-released months after 2005's superb I HAVE THE ROOM ABOVE HER, TRIOISM features the same lineup as the former album but dates back to 1994. Guitarist ...
