Piano Sonatas
$15.05 Yo-Yo Ma's holiday album SONGS OF JOY AND PEACE admirably aims to be all-inclusive by featuring songs from the Christian, Jewish, and Islamic traditions, as well as feel-good popular favorites like "Here Comes the Sun" and "My Favorite Things." Guests include Diana Krall, James Taylor, Joshua Redman, Chris Botti, and Dave Brubeck, among others. The set ranges across religious traditions and styles, but a feeling of open-hearted warmth, along with Yo-Yo Ma's rich, swelling cello, provides the glue that binds this diverse group of musicians and songs.
Personnel: Yo-Yo Ma (cello); James "J.T." Taylor (vocals, guitar); Chris Thile (vocals, mandolin); Diana Krall (vocals, piano); David Lasley, Caroline Taylor , Carolina Assad, Kate Markowitz, Alison Krauss, Andrea Zonn, Arnold McCuller, Clarice Assad, Badi Assad (vocals); Renée Fleming (soprano); Romero Lubambo, Odair Assad, Sergio Assad (acoustic guitar); Siamak Aghaei (santur); Jake Shimabukuro (ukulele); Jonathan Gandelsman (violin); Natalie MacMaster (fiddle); Kayhan Kalhor (kamancha); Nicholas Cords (viola); Matthew Brubeck (cello); Marcus Milius (harmonica, background vocals); Victor Prieto (accordion); Paquito d'Rivera (clarinet); Joshua Redman (tenor saxophone); Chris Botti (trumpet); Marcus Rojas (tuba, ...
| | Il Divo Ancora CD (2005)
Piano Sonatas
$9.59 Knowing how to strike while the iron is hot, the international all-male pop-opera revue Il Divo, assembled by AMERICAN IDOL's Simon Cowell, followed up its 2005 debut (and subsequent Christmas album) with yet another outing in early 2006. Here the dashing vocal quartet--Urs Buhler (Switzerland), Sebastien Izambard (France), Carlos Marin (Spain), and David Miller (U.S.)--stays true to its multi-lingual repertoire, offering up a suitably dramatic Spanish version of Eric Carmen's "All By Myself" ("Solo Otra Vez") and an English/French rendition of "I Believe in You" (with Celine Dion), among other numbers. While the arrangements on ANCORA are lush and majestic, they never overshadow the full, passionate voices of the foursome, who have clearly become used to working together as a powerful ...

Piano Sonatas
$11.35 A new set by British saxophonist and composer Andy Sheppard is always a welcome proposal, but his 13th album, and 14th release overall, also happens to be his debut for ECM. The music on MOVEMENTS IN COLOR is an ambitious, but utterly lyrical blend of Latin, Middle Eastern, and post-bop, and it is realized by musicians such as jazz guitarist John Parricelli (who plays acoustically here) and tabla player Kuljit Bhamra--members of Sheppard's regular quartet -- guitarist and electronic musician Eivind Aarset, and double bassist Arild Andersen, who also plays some electronics. MOVEMENTS IN COLOR is a wonderfully breezy, airy, but very sophisticated recording that ...
| | Atrium Musicae De Madrid Musique De La Grèce Antique / Paniagua, Atrium Musicae CD (1994)
Piano Sonatas
$7.99 Considerably more remains of ancient Greek architecture than the music of this advanced and inspirational civilization. And although works explaining Greek music theory have survived, the actual existence of composed pieces from these times comes down to only a few scraps that survived on papyrus, marble columns, and other written sources. This Spanish ensemble under the leadership of Gregorio Paniagua pieced together these remains and performed them with reconstructions of instruments from ancient Greek sources, some of which, such as the bagpipe, remain in use today. Portions of the music included may ...

$18.29 | | Raz Mesinai Cyborg Acoustics CD (2004)
Piano Sonatas
$10.36 Cyborg Acoustics is a spooky listen. The main piece, "Ghosts of the Gulag," is a piece composed for strings, percussion, and sampling. Dark and unsettling, it's a highly composed mixture of scraped strings and skittering percussion, with odd, underwater-sounding treatments and high-frequency clouds that appear and disappear in the mix. Between the treatments and Mesinai's sampling of the string players, one is never sure of what's being performed live and what's being layered on top with sampling. The other piece, "The Reanimator," is altogether different, with John Zorn playing alto sax accompanied by "genetically enhanced improvisers." This consists of sampled and treated performances by vocalist Shelley Hirsch, percussionist Tim Barnes, and Mesinai himself on piano, all sampled, treated, and mixed for Zorn to perform along with. It's not really an easier listen at all, but ...
