JazzTimes (p.78) - "[With] a hazy 'But for Now' that superbly captures the vaguely menacing romanticism of Bob Dorough's lyric and a gorgeously pensive reading of the R&B masterpiece 'Out in the Cold Again." This Love Of Mine
$11.65 Digitally remastered and expanded edition of the British Synthpop star's 1984 sophomore album including eight bonus tracks. The Flat Earth's sophisticated sound was a battle cry to any doubters, combining Dolby's signature keyboards into a more organic, layered sound. 'Hyperactive!', the result of a bizarre evening spent at Michael Jackson's house, bore the most fruit, repeating the success of 'She Blinded Me With Science', and scoring Thomas his first Top 20 hit in his home country. The epic 'Dissidents' revisits Dolby's love of cold war espionage, and at the other end of the spectrum, the haunting Dan Hicks' ballad "I Scare Myself" is turned into a piano-led affair with a sexy, sultry video. The latter is a solo embodiment of the shimmering, breathy sound that would form the heart of the Prefab Sprout sound he was integral to creating - production values which he has said he ranks amongst his personal career highs. Bonus tracks include non album cuts, remixes and live recordings. EMI. 2009.
Personnel: Thomas Dolby (vocals, piano); Kevin Armstrong (guitar, trumpet, background vocals); Chucho Merchán (guitar); Stevie Wonder (harmonica); Peter Thomas (trombone); Lyndon Connah, Debra Barsha (keyboards, background vocals); Justin Hildreth (drums); Cliff Brigden (percussion, drum programming); Lesley Fairbairn, Adele Bertei, Bruce Woolley (background vocals). Audio Mixers: Alan Douglas; Mike Shipley; Thomas Dolby. Audio Remasterer: Peter Mew. Recording information: Brussels, Belgium. Photographers: Richard Haughton; Richard Haughton. Unknown Contributor Role: Matthew Salt. Exceptionally mature for a sophomore effort, The Flat Earth has held up considerably well since its 1984 release. This staying power belongs to a fantastic ensemble of supporting players as much as to Thomas Dolby's songwriting and crisp production. "Dissidents" steps in cautiously and conjures images of blacklisted authors and ugly snow, gray from oppression. Here and elsewhere, Matthew Seligman's bass is a welcome addition -- throughout the album his work is lavish, growling, popping through octaves, funk-a-fied and ...
