The band's most cohesive album to date, blends quirky new wave melodie with the band's hometown signature punk rock sound, concreted with their uniquely sarcastic humor.

Their fanatical cadre will love that Charge!! ends the Aquabats' nearly six-year album drought. But the combo's hiatus has also refocused its musical and ideological attack. Intact are the pop references, zany in-jokes, and Batman villain fetishism. And the album has more exclamation points per syllable than the average lad's mag cover. (One song is simply called "Waterslides!") But Charge!! is much more rewarding musically. It doesn't loiter awkwardly between punk, pop, ska, and broad humor -- it keeps the pressure on with a catchy guitar- and keyboard-driven blend of anthemic choruses and appropriately squawky elements. Enjoyment of the Aquabats will still depend on your tolerance for gimmickry. But Charge!! has hooks and its eyes on the prize. A lot of guys have written songs about teenage dirtbags and losers getting lucky. But their subtext is usually a whiny one, like they know it's all a fantasy. Not the Aquabats. "Nerd Alert!" is not a wistful sigh but a proud call to arms. MC Bat Commander reclaims the title cliché over a kicky cross of Nerf Herder and Sparks (with sly references to the Revenge of the Nerds soundtrack), and lyrics like "The revolution has begun/So raise your fist and take a stand/With your super cool wristbands!" align "Alert!" with the 21st century's tech- and gaming-heavy "geek cool" movement. "Look at Me (I'm a Winner)!" is a shiny plastic Weezer/Cheap Trick romp; it has some terrific lyrical imagery in the line "Four radios blastin' classic rock/And they're pointing at you!" Meanwhile, "Meltdown!," "Fashion Zombies!," and "Plastic Lips!" are concise slices of new wave-inspired pop that retain that particular Aquabatian flair for the totally wiggy. Older fans might miss the horn sections or heightened theatrics. But Charge!! does geekdom proud. It proves it's possible to put "hilarious," "solid songwriting," and "mechanical ape" in the same sentence. ~ Johnny Loftus

The Aquabats: MC Bat Commander (vocals); Chainsaw (guitar); Jimmy the Robot (saxophone, keyboards); Crash McLarson (bass guitar); Ricky Fitness (drums).

Ah ha... you silly kids. If you know absolutely anything about the Aquabats, you'll know that they are NOT ska. They don't label themselves as ska, and most of all, when asked, they'll flat out deny it. Just because they have some horns, doesn't make them religiously ska. Just like fast, sloppy guitar playing doesn't make you metal. The album was genious, and literally the essence of The Aquabats. I fell in love with literally every track, and I really think this goes to show how far the aquabats have come. It's a different sound, but in a good way.

2 stars Upsetting
In a word, Charge! is upsetting. The Aquabats have headed down the same street that NOFX did; they've completely abandoned ska. It's undenyable that some of the songs on Charge! are catchy, but none of them can compare to the upbeat, energy filled tracks previously recorded on Fury. I expected much more.

5 stars It's about time
Finally the Aquabats have a record label that supports them and appreciates the direction they have been heading for years. All these songs on CHARGE!! were written years ago, so I knew the horns would be absent, and I love it. I like ska, but the Aquabats are going to get much more respect without the horns. Don't waste another penny on a CD unless it's CHARGE!!

4 stars A modern aqua cd for us modern bats
This is a very good cd. The lack of horns is dissappointing, but hey the synthezizer and keyboard are cool too. It is far better than the floating eye cd by far(their worst album in my opinion). I get the feeling that this cd is a more mature sound or direction the bats are going in. The humor is there, but it's not like "worms make dirt" kinda humor. If you have never listened to the aquabats and aren't inclined to like ska much, then pick this one up. You will not regret it. If you do enjoy ska, then pick up "The Fury" as I still consider it to be their best album(but then again i really like ska and horns!)

Steve Earle is widely known as a tireless political activist who's not afraid to use his music to further the causes for which he fights. In 2004, America was in dire need of forward-looking activism, and Earle responded with THE REVOLUTION STARTS NOW. The album was written and recorded quickly in order for Earle to get his two cents in before the Presidential election, and it turned out to be both his most overtly political and most effectively concise offering to date. With a mix of country and straightforward rock & roll, Earle engages in rabble-rousing (the title track), tells the tales of people victimized by the ...

The absence of piano is significant--Waits's jazzy harmonic underpinning is entirely dismantled here, leaving only the most basic, blues-oriented structures atop which Waits hangs his distinctive poetic imagery, at once surreal and highly detailed. There's an overwhelming sense of darkness ("How's ...

The most useful aspect of Terry Opie’s Catholic Education was the time his teacher brought a Black Sabbath record to class to prove it wasn’t satanic. Hmmm, he thought, I’m not so sure. He showed it to three other specimens, who took it all in and eventually they formed a mind-blowing band, specialising in nefariously loud sound. Their debut was good, but ...
