During the late '90s, Prince attempted to help resurrect the careers of two funk icons from the '70s -- Chaka Khan and Larry Graham -- by signing both to his label, NPG, and producing new albums for each. The Prince/Graham album was issued in 1998 as GCS 2000, and turned out to be the first new studio album credited to Graham Central Station in nearly two decades. Whereas such earlier Graham Central Station classics as Release Yourself sound as if they were recorded entirely live, GCS 2000 reflects Prince's renowned "studio perfection" approach throughout, especially on such tracks as "Free" and "Groove On."
